Also if you are defying specific manufacturers safety notices, you may find in the event of a claim you could be uninsured.

You would still have minimum 3rd party cover.

I ran 18"s for 10 years on my 44' didn't change anything else, true it was occasional use and yes on our useless roads at times it would tramline (but you don't have to have wide wheels for that!)

As I now use the car more often, it's been lowered has new 968 castor mounts, new bushes and now sits on 16" wheels - it is a better drive

That's the thing. I am all for listening and understanding what's right and wrong. I just think surely in this day and age we are able to make it work.

Now we have heard the reasons why we shouldn't have 18s. Is there any people that already have 18s that can offer their opinion also?

The last chap, sorry I don't remember your name. Before you switched to 16s did you make any changes when you fitted the 18s?

If you are fitting winter tyres, you want smaller wheels to allow a larger profile tyre. This gives the tyre more squish in the tyres. You also want narrower tyres for more grip - have a look at any winter rally car for example.
Grip levels will be reduced, ride quality too, though I guess the winters would help with any potential tram-lining from the larger wheels.

If you are want 18s why not use them as your summer tyre, and get sensible smaller and therefore better grip wheels for winter tyres, since this is the entire point of fitting winter tyres surely?

I like this suggestion :)

No wheel really looks good in dark winter evenings and gloomy weekends!

I currently have 17 turbo twists that need repairing so I suppose I could keep these for the winter with narrower tyres and then pick myself a nice set of 18s for the summer. This is what you mean right? :)

I don't use my 944 in the wet let alone snow, I've got a A4 quattro for that :) . What has been said about winter wheels/tyres sounds about right for the 944.
Re the 18" wheels/tyres you will have to uprate the suspension to control the extra weight, but my 18's are only 1/2" wider on the front and 1" wider on the rear than standard, and with correct geo I get no tramlining.
The 20 year old TB about fitting bigger wheels is rumoured to be Porsche's way of covering themselves against possible litigation in the US, where owners have been running bigger wheels without issue for years. In any case I expect if you asked Porsche GB if they approved ANY unofficial modification to their standard spec they would say no.
