Looking at replacing the rear wheel bearings on my 89 944t as I have a hum from rear offside. From PET catalogue part number appears to be 999 053 020 01. Does anyone know if rear wheel bearings are common fit across all 944's, and can anyone recommend good supplier with best price ?

Had both mine done on the 968 earlier this year at my local specialist. Not the cheapest to do at £180 a side but it sounds so much better now.

But the specialist did point out that the box said it was the same bearing for all post 85.5 944, 968 and BMW 5 Series! And after having a look at the 9442 PET it does list only one rear wheel bearing.

This is a job I'm about to tackle myself, the bearing is the same as a BMW 5 series and also the Boxster too from what I've read so far. I have a friend who supplies bearings for a living so I'll soon find out what's best available in our size.

I'd have thought ECP should be able to source SNR, SKF or similar quality bearing kits. As long as you ask for the best quality parts they can source a lot of parts. But as ever the advice is always to check with your local OPC too.

Just don't go for a cheapo bearing.

I got reminded today of why I generally do not skimp on parts. ARB Drop link boots had failed on my Pug 205 after... wait for it.... 2 years and 1000 miles. What a waste of cash those drop links were (all 4 boots are shot on them with the lower ones being a different size).

I tend to stick with GKN for the wheel bearings that are the ones of the right specification for the 944. The BMW ones have a lower loading

Mine are SKF, so not the cheap Chinese ones, but still had 5 series BMW on the box

As the labour is biggest part it don't really save to do the job twice with a half price bearing but again I don't see why you can't get a better price from cut out the middle man. You do It on a press? Or perhaps the car? Removing drive shafts replace the gear box oil seals as well.

I had my bearing smashed out then the cup weild to shrink it then knocked that out. Frozen bearing pulled in with some treaded bar.

I would bet the Porsche boxed bearings are made by SKF, FAG or some other decent company Porsche don't make the bearings

True but they will have exclusivity on certain bits. Peugeot certainly do on cambelts with Dayco (from differing part nos. to the belts being wider and thicker). Ford do with filters (Bosch on the Ford TDCis supply two filters, one with an E on the end and one without (this can be Googled as can the Pug cambelt for 205 GTis). You can guess what most motor factors supply to give the 'OE' stamp on them...

Of course I could simply be a cynic with the above evidence.

I bought an unused Continental Direct kit from a forum member, SKF bearings iirc, with 944/911 written on the box.

When I googled the part number (CDK513) they were being sold as BMW 5 series suitable for a lot less than a 'Porsche' marked item, around £25 I think!
