I've had my 964 for over 12 months already, not that i've managed to use it much!!
I have recently moved to Appleton and have spotted 2 or 3 very tidy 944's in the area and just wondered if they belong to any local TIPEC members?
I'm Hoping to get out to a couple of club nights (if the weather recovers) before the summer ends and meet some fellow members...............fingers crossed!!

Simon

Hi and welcome from me. One lovely looking 964, split rim wheels reeeeeeally nice 8) I'm sure a local club member will be along soon to advise on next club meet. How do you find the 964 turbo compared to your '89 944 turbo?

Andy

Hi Guys, thanks for the welcome.

Andy, I loved the 944 turbo having grown up driving Renault 5 GT turbos, I was used to the differing driving style required when pushing a turbo motor. I did look at the S2, and had I been wanting an everyday car, it would have been the right choice. But as I wanted a weekend toy, the turbo and its extra personality won me over!!!

I bought the 944 back in 2000, it was an 89 'F' and one of the first mass production 250's. It had done 58k and was velvet red with linin leather and sports seats. It had the original polished D90's, which were a bit more smoothly profiled than the later S2 and 964 version which look a bit plain in comparison! Anyway, I was forced to sell the car in 2002 in order to help fund a career change............I was gutted to say the least!

I find the 964 turbo very similar in personality to the 944. Same fantastic build quality, same basic but functional interior styling (964 being more basic than the 944). The 944 could be driven harder more of the time than the 964, and would probably be the faster car of the two across country on a twisty B road, thanks to its fantastic balance and handling. The 964 is more agressive but needs more room and road if you want to push it. Once it has the space (which is a rare event on the roads today) it is hugely fast. Turbo lag isn't as painfull as it's made out although get caught in the wrong gear and it can take a while to recover its pace. Having said that, as with any turbo, if you keep it 'on boost' through the gears, it will accelerate smoothly and constantly to any speed you wish with little or no let up in pace.

To sum it up, both cars demand your concentration, but more so in the 964. The 964 sounds better and driving it is more of an an event. However, I still feel the 944 is the more fun in a 'jump in and drive' kind of way?!

Heres a few pics of the 944 just before I sold it. I think it had done about 64k at the time, and I sold it for £1000 more than I had bought it for around 18 months earlier !

I thought I would never see my old 944 again. Then, last summer shortly after I bought the 964, I was at a porsche gathering one night when it rolled into the car park. Appart from cup wheels, a private plate, some extra stone chips and around 30,000 extra miles on the clock, it was exactly the same as the day I let it go.

I'm good mates now with its current owner who lives over near Bolton.

Heres the two cars together (before I sorted out the 964's off-road factory suspension)!!

Hi norm,

Did you change the wheels on your car or have you left them as was? How come your after a turbo now? I'm not convinced you'll find one as much fun (in a usable way) as your stunning C2. We should defenately arrange a little get together one evening or something. I've hardly had the car out all summer, which is a shame!

I had the golf out at Oulton a few weeks back. All was well until a fuel line split. I managed to get that fixed only to head out on track and lose all boost! Turns out an engine mount has given up and the engine has fallen slightly to one side. The extra strain on the intercooler pipework was too much and had popped the hose off. Not a quick fix unfortunately so that brought an end to the day!! The car is still sat waiting for me to get it fixed! But I'm hoping to get it to at least one more track day before the years out ........we will see!

Simon

LO and welcome from sunny Herts. If my 944 turbo had been that colour I would almost certainly still have it as it's one of may favourite all time Porsche colours , very nice indeed I hope you enjoy your lesser Porsche

Regards
Mas

Simon!

To tell you the truth, since the car come back from the Euro trip, the car hasnt been touched in the garage. So the wheels are sitting there, but now im distracted by another 964 im building, but more mad than the white one. Ive gone nuts with Porsches at the minute, and im selling all out on the Vw thing. As I mentioned Ive got a mk2 Golf Rallye that is all motorsport with R32, and now I may sell her due to this new addiction! Hence wanting a 964 Turbo, which ive always dreamt of when i was a kid.

A friend of mine said he saw you at Oulton, as he lives at the park probably tinkering either with his Audi works team or working on a Seat Cupra cup car. Hes a proper dubhead and loves mk2 golfs.

Lets meet up! Just need to MOT mine, postponed by the weather  but yes lets catchup soon!
