Hi All,

From my user name you can guess my background.

I have been into speed most of my life and have owned a wide range of sports cars over the past 50 years. I also run 2 motorbikes including a 190bhp BMW so at heart a geriatric hooligan.

I am currently driving a TVR Chimera 450 but advancing years suggest changing to something less hairy chested. I have been looking at 987 S variants and have a budget of £30K. I am unsure about which options are worthwhile I'm not a great listener to music more radio 4 and TMS in the summer.

So I'm looking for some expert advice about purchase I expect to buy within the next month. Any help/advice most welcome.

The 987 is a great car. With that sort of budget I'd have thought you should be looking at the Gen2 987 with low mileage. As with any car, history is important. Options are a difficult topic. There don't seem to be a list of 'must have' options. Choose a car with the colour combinations you want and the options you prefer and just enjoy the car. It doesn't sound like you have any lack of confidence in the car purchase arena, but if you are unsure, post a link to what you've seen. You'll get plenty of response from people who know a lot more than me!

For that sort of money you could get the best of the 928 GTS (5.4) ....

Got the correct number of cylinders as well...8... lol

Plus its faster (top speed) than A Boxster....

Also 928s are appreciating drastically.... Boxsters are depreciating....

As I am famous for saying...."When I go out in the morning and turn the key (daily driver) and that HUGE V8 rumbles into life, it puts a smile on my face all day "

Don't listen to those front engined mad men! Whoever heard of such a preposterous idea as to put an engine in the front- I mean where are you legs meant to go?!

...are you sure you want to go down the boxster route? They are fantastic cars no denying it, I had a Cayman for a while and loved it. BUT I found if you are going down the modern pork route, and you have £30K to play with I think a 911 is the answer. They have a top down option too, and I think would always feel more special than a 987.

But if it is a boxster you want than go for it! Gen 2 all the way with PDK and sports exhaust. Other options just go with whatever you fancy. Colour wise, my opinion, you can't beat silver.

At least try a PDK before saying no, I always thought I was manual through and through before I got my current PDK machine.

Thanks for all the useful advice I took possession today of a 2012 Black Edition with all the bells and whistles, 15k miles and one lady owner, and despite the wet weather enjoyed the 70 mile drive home. It's now sitting in my garage dirty but soon to be given the OCD cleaning treatment at least that's what my family say about the cleaning of my cars and motorbikes. Thanks again for the advice I think I have found a good one.
