Hey folks!

I seem to have gone and convinced myself that buying a front engine Porsche is the way forward, so I thought I'd sign up and see if I could get some advice and maybe scoop myself a loved example :)

I'm a big fan of standard cars, preferring to marvel at the concourse sections of a show, instead of the modified... Previous cars I've loved have been a Mk2 VW Golf 16v and more recently a VW Corrado VR6, which I'm preparing to sell to fund my hankering for a Porsche. I'm getting bored of the VR6 and instead of spoiling the suspension or ploughing mad money into paying someone else to do a big expensive engine upgrade, I reckon I'd be much better off coming to play with the big boys!

With my sensible head on, I think I need to look at a 944, one which is at least as exciting as a VR6. I reckon that means S2 or Turbo, ie over 160bhp/ton and ideally sub 6sec 0-60mph (I know using numbers alone is a crude measure). Also I need a car that's really fun and handles really well. It's going to be a weekend toy. It needs to be a tin top as I don't like wind in my hair ;)

...Crazy-me thinks a 928 might be an option, mostly on account of spotting this beauty last weekend on Pistonheads. http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/ ... to/1056332 - Mmmm v8!

I've ruled out a 968 on price only and am working on the basis that it's essentially a reengineered late 944 "S3". Certainly this is the Wikipedia view of the world. Do any experts want to weigh in on this point?

I've had a good read of this 944 buyers guide already: viewtopic.php?f=25&t=5183

My budget is about £5k max and I can cope with about £1.5k a year for maintenance.

This is my idea of beautiful: http://www.tipec.net/_forums/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=14420

OK, that's enough about me :) Who can give me some tips or pointers?

Cheers!

Chris

Why not join the Club and get along to your local Midlands meeting it would be well worth the effort. (I did in 2004)
If you are after a standard car in concourse condition and want a sub 6sec performance then you may need to make a compromise eg pay for a concourse vehicle or get a good sound Turbo and spend a bit on getting some extra performance from it, depends what you really want stunning looks/condition or stunning performance (especially mid range eg 30 to 70+?)
I had a stunning S2 Cab but spent more time keeping it Stunning rather than driving it. Common sense prevailed and I changed to a tastefully tweaked Turbo which gives me the driving enjoyment I and others just love.
Each to his own.

Hi and welcome :hello2: Try a few test drives if you're serious. If you fancy a 928, try it for a year. I'm sure if you buy a £5k one and spend £1.5k on it aver a year, you'll get your money back after a year? I started with a 2 ltr 924, then a 2.5 ltr 944 before buying 5 ltr 928. Maybe you want to start low and build up?

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm not after a concourse car as such but they are the ones I lust after :)

I'm certainly keen to be an active club member and go to meets and shows etc.

:bounce:

I think I'm with you on that looks vs performance decision. I'd rather have a clean used car than a trailer queen. Ultimately I will want to enjoy the ride but I am not adverse to caring for it and properly storing it etc.

Should I worried about the more frequent service intervals of a turbo and / or bigger more expensive maintenance bills? I think I read that a turbo will want an oil change every 3k miles.

I'll get reading :)
