Hi all,

I've signed up to your forum to hopefully join in some discussions, whilst growing my knowledge with a view to buying a 986 Boxster-S.

Only had a brief nosey around, but the forum certainly seems active and full of interest.

I presume as is the case with most forums, I have to post a few times before features such as PMs are enabled? Maybe I missed the information when signing up?

Hi and welcome :hello2: There is a sticky about the rules when you sign up, but have never looked at it for a few years.

986 is a value car these days and and are such a bargain. I wrote a what to watch out for on a thread somewhere? I'll look for it. If you get a good one, you'll have so much fun. I have been told that the hood should be down unless the storm has a name. :lol:

Hello and welcome, winter used to be the time to buy a convertable, but with a lot of the Boxsters having hardtops this may no longer be true, still looking in the classifieds there are a good few for sale, good luck in your search

I found what I wrote on another thread, but reading it now I'm not sure how correct it?

I can let you know what I found out when I researched buying a 996. As you are looking at a 986, there should be some similarities. They can smoke on start up, they don't all do it, but from what I read, it's not the end of the world, only a quirk of the flat 6 engine. Smoking all the time and under acceleration is quite different. The IMS and RMS issues are quite a problem if not sorted, I believe Jon Mitchell described it on this forum as a hand grenade with a loose or missing pin. The car should have a had a clutch, recent pads and discs, front radiators and AC condensers by now, unless exceptionally low mileage. Check if it has "N" rated tyres. It's not the end of the world if the owner can explain when he went outside of Porsche recommendations, but if he bought them because they're cheaper then expect he done this with all parts he got fitted to the car. The service schedule is 12,000 miles or 12 months regardless

Thanks for the replies all. I'm currently reading studiously, but as there's no rush (this'll be car 3), it'll be a case of buying when the right one comes along. Seems there are some interesting cars on PCGB, but unless I ask a friend to approach people, it's a bit of a problem making contact.

Ideally I'm after a car that has been owned and run by an enthusiast, that has just got on and used the car whilst respecting it. I don't want a infrequently used garage-queen, and don't believe I should be put off by cars doing average 10-12k/yr mileage.

This car is quite interesting (http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=733799) , but I need to understand prices a bit more before really bothering private sellers. On paper this car would appear to tick the right boxes generally.
