Evening All,

I am currently in mid deal for the purchase of a 1989 ,944 turbo S2. Either way I will own one soon, but hopefully the particular car I am in negotation with.

I live in Farnham Royal (just north of Slough). I'm completely new to Porsche ownership, and upto now I have been playing with Renault 21 Turbo's since 2005. (hence my user name Phil21turbo).

As a big fan of 80's turbo variants, the 944 seems to be an appealing and affordable entry into porsche ownership. Not only that but from my observations the 944 turbo will rise in value and see the car as a small investment. The 944 will be a week=end only car, garaged and will get a dose of rust protection (if needed) , full inner, outer and under polish/protection.

As soon as I have the new turbo in my hands I will post up some pics, and no doubt be looking for guidance on restoration, maintenance, supply of parts and the most important aspect which will be meeting new owners and attending some of the european trips I have seen mentioned in this site...

Below is a pic of where I have come from. A 2.0 turbo charged 8v Renault 21 turbo. Remapped to 329bhp (2010) and more recently a more driveable 282bhp (2012). WIll probably regret selling, but its time for a change... ps it is for sale @ 3.5k if you know any Renault fans... :D

HI & welcome

Lovely looking 21 Turbo. Remember when these were current, quick but a real left field choice at the time.

Hi and thanks Jim. Bang for buck there is not much out there you can buy that provides rivalry to the sierra cosworth at mid-range speeds... With prices between £600 -£1200, they often end up in the hands of people that b*stardise them.
In France they go for 3-5k, and alot of Uk models have been broken for the transmission (UN1), which is used in GT40 kit cars, Lotus, and many kit car variants...

But less of the Renault talk, and now time to start focussing on 944's

21 looks nice, I bet all those Gallic horses thro' the front wheels are a handful, good luck with the '44 turbo search, should get similar amount of horses with a bit of tuning

Nice one, welcome!

Get down to the Thames Valley meeting at the Novello pub on the A4 between Maidenhead and Reading first Tuesday of the month 7-7.30pm onwards. There's some knowledge kicking around that may be useful (not from me though  )

Welcome to the forum.

If you need any advice while checking a potential purchase out, or advice once you have it, let us know.

My advice is only available in this forum for this club, although you might see me in other forums (sometimes under the nick indi9xx) it is only to put records straight if I notice my advice here is being misquoted (chinese whispers)

All I ask in exchange, is if you find any advice we offer useful, you join the club.

Once you do join the club, my company also offer 10% discount on our advertised parts prices, as well as in depth technical support by telephone and email, including spending time talking you through how to diagnose and repair your own car!

Welcome to the forum Phil.

Must admit my biggest memory of R21 turbo was the support race before the 1990 Le Mans 24 Hours. Massive pile up off the start line left Oscar Laurrauri feeling crap for the main race.
Therefore Jesus Parreja drove the leading Porsche 962 for 16 hours out of the 24 and then had it break down with 15 minutes to go.
Was won by Jaguar but cracking race throughout.

Enjoy the 944

Thanks Richard.... I've probably seen the video somewhere, but cannot recall... Great cars. Have not been to Le Mans since 2005 and had a brilliant time. Maybe 2013 or 2014 I will get out there. The company I work for sponsor Martin Brundles son, and we have a small connection to their Le Mans efforts via sponsorship. Should really try and make use of that to get access to the hospitality area.
Have to say the bend at Arnage at night is bloody amazing! At night you get a real appreciation of how fast some of the machinery is.. Daylight seems to take the edge out of it....

Here is a link for a guy called Mick de Jonge ay Le Mans classic... He is running a 21 in various races across europe. His engine is very similar to mine. Bar cam and turbo / mapping. He also has a 6spd gearbox made by gto engineering (uk)...

3.5 mins in their is a 944 aswell...

Hi Paul,

unfortunately wont get the chance to make my first TIPEC meet.. Car has had some clutch issues and still resides with current owner pending repair as pedal is on floor.

Owner had car into local porsche specialist mid week due to following a brake fluid change and system bleed, the pedal had fallen to the floor. (my hunch was slave cylinder) The garage local to the car diagnosed as a master cylinder issue and replaced along with several pipes to tune 0f £250-£300 incl labour. Today I was half way to collect 944 and owner called to say that following a drive to local petrol station the clutch pedal had dropped again and he just about made it onto the drive! Car is booked in for a potential slave cylinder replacement on Monday. SO I have come home empty handed and disappointed as it was a lovely day to drive the 944!

On the plus side when I collect car later this week it would of had a new slave/master cylinder, which is only adds to the bargain purchase I seem to have made...

Assuming you will meet in November I will hopefully see you then...

Does anyone go to the ACE Cafe ?

P.s. Admin : as soon as I have the car on my drive I will sign up as a fully paid member to TIPEC..
