Hi all, just want to pass on a tip really. My dead reliable 1982 944 displayed the above symptom just before Christmas. The engine would try to idle but needed coaxing on the throttle and even then I could not get it to rev anymore than 2,500rpm.Popping and bagging. Impossible to idle and impossible to drive.

I had fuel, fuel pressure, sparks and timing was spot on. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the problem part was the ECM. Despite being housed under the dash, damp had got in and corrosion got at the processors. A repaired ECM (£500) has resulted in the engine performing as per normal. Thats it!
