Hi

I am Chris, I am a Porsche newbie.. Or at least I will be once I buy one!

I have just relocated back to the UK after a long time in the USA and have decided to buy two interesting older toys, rather than one new BMW.

So I am looking forward to scratching an itch that I have had since the poster of a 911 that used to hang on my bedroom wall as I was growing up.

I think I have chosen a 968 and a 993 as my purchases, although I am curious about the differences between a 968 and a 944, so may be tempted to buy a 944 Turbo or 944 S2 as well as the 993 (A must have I think)

I will be spending one week per month in Germany with work (actually the birthplace of the car's I want to buy) and plan on driving it (that is until I get lazy/bored and catch a plane), so both cars need to be well sorted good examples.

Anyway, seeya in the other areas!

So I will be asking lots of dumb questions no doubt, prepare to be underwhelmed with my stupidity about all things Porsche!

928, would love to, but I think the fuel costs would destroy me, wouldn't they?

208mph in your signature? Really??

Hi Chris.

Welcome to the club. I've only been doing stuff on the forums and everyone's been great.

I drive a '85 944. Had it 14 months. love it.

Good luck with the search.

GAZ 9440. :D

Hi Chris :)

I use my 928 S2 (4.7) as a daily driver and get around 14 to 16 to the gallon...although I only drive around 3 miles to my work so the engine is always cold...

Generally a 928 will do around 15 to 20 around town and low 20`s on a run....you might even squeeze 25 if you drive very carefully on a long run...

Or 2 to 4 to the gallon if you use a huge Nitrous system like mine lol :)

And yes ...although its 208.1 mph actually :)

All the best Brett :)

Hi Chris

It would certainly be an interesting commute. :)

We came back from Germany earlier yesterday, having spent the week exploring the Alsace and Eifel Regions.

Whilst the 968 or 944S2 are great cars, I would buy a 996 to munch those miles and have the comfort.

Hi :)

I had access to a sort of runway near me.

The car, only a couple of things really, Lsd , wider wheels/tyres and nothing mechanically...

Apart from the most sophisticated Nitrous System in the UK lol...

All the best Brett :)

I had a couple of 996 while living in the states until really recently, a 996 3.6 Carrera and later a Turbo and was a tiny bit disappointing with both in all honesty.. Both felt like they were lacking in character or excitement.

Don't get me wrong, but the 996 seemed very detached, it could have been any one of a number of modern cars.. comfortable for sure, but really not much different than being in a reasonably powerful Merc.

The 996 turbo certainly had the speed, but it never felt like an adventure. I took a friends 993 around Laguna once and then booked an experience in a 993 RS track car around the same track and fell even more in love. I will never afford an RS and I will be the first to say I will probably feel more knackered turning up in a 993 or 968 than in a 996, but if I wanted comfort and to arrive feeling refreshed, I would probably fly there. I really want something that will make the journey like a mini holiday or adventure, me the road and a car with some personality versus the scenery.

I am probably mad, and I do fully expect to start flying after a few months, but who knows, it is just a once a month commute and the novelty might not ever wear off.
