Hello,

I'm considering taking the plunge and buying a Porsche as a weekend car. I've been thinking about this for a few years on and off, so have considered several models, but I keep coming back to the 944S2 Cabriolet.

I've read the buyer's guides (on here and also Hartech), but as I'm not familiar with a lot of the components of the car, some of the things referred to would be hard for me to see. For example, the guide states that I should check the fuel lines, but I don't know where these are. Also, to check the PAS pump is not leaking, but again, I wouldn't know where that is. As you may have guessed, I'm no mechanic, but I'm a fairly practical person, so I'm happy to get my hands dirty.

I wondered if anyone who has an 944S2 (guess it doesn't have to a cabriolet) would be kind enough to show me around their car, so that when I go to look at one I might buy, I at least know what I'm looking for.

I live in Tewkesbury, which is just off J9 of the M5, so anywhere in that area would be perfect.

My daily drive is a BMW335D. I would like to change it to an Audi S5 (yes, I know they drink fuel), but dealers are offering me peanuts for mine. I'm getting no interest from adverts on Autotrader, Top Marques or Pistonheads for a private sale. So, instead of changing my BMW, I'm going to use the money I was going to spend upgrading, to buy the Porsche. Also, as I do around 18,000 miles a year, by not buying the S5, I'll probably save enough on fuel alone to maintain the Porsche!

If anyone can help out, I'd be very grateful.

Cheers,
Bryan

Hi Bryan

I ran an S2 for several years, they are great fun and a cracking weekend toy.

The best advice I can give is to attend one of the Clubs Regional Meetings, you sit between 2 Regions. Central and Bristol, both have plenty of 944 owners.

Mick and Sue the RO's for Bristol actually run an S2 Cab.

Hi Bryan, i run a S2 and have had bmw e36 and e46 coupes but changed my last bmw for the S2 cab. the newer bmw just did't handle, go or stop as well as the 20 year old porsche ( tho the m3's are fun) . both porsches have been totaly reliable ( touch wood ) and i would recomend buying one.
i paid £3400 for a s2 cab with all new belts etc and have seen better ones at similar prices.
look for rust free with good history, long ownership is a sign that the owner has been happy with the car and these are usually well looked after, dont be to put of by high milage if the history and price are good.
good luck

I wish I could help, mate, but my location is up north.
I have a 944S2 cab & my daily drive is a 335D BMW.
If ever you are up this neck of the woods, please let me know and you are more than welcome to a chinwag :D

Whereabouts up north do you live? I have family in Carlisle and my wife's family live in Lancashire. We travel up quite often.

Cheers,
Bryan

Hi, Bryan,
Sorry for late response - been away for a few days.
I live in Hull, East Yorkshire and, between the family, we have 4 944S2 cabs.
You are more than welcome over here if you can reach us.
Bob

Bob,

No problem at all.

Thanks for the offer, but I've been brave and bought this : http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3776396.htm It's exactly what I wanted, so I just hope I've covered the essentials and as it came in under budget, I've got some cash in reserve to get a few things sorted if need be.

I just took a common sense approach as the car has a lack of rust, good history, drives well, no strange noises, no smoke, nothing hanging off or leaking, oil pressure correct, roof works etc. Belts were done 4,000 miles ago, but that was almost 4 years ago, so will get them done, along with the water pump.

I may live to regret it, but I always find that the attitude of the seller reflects what a car's actually like.

Anyway, the car's certainly put a smile on my face, which is what it's all about.

Cheers,
Bryan

Well done, I doubt if you will regret it :)
Looks like a nice motor (and in almost the Fastest Colour! :) )
I ran an S2 Cab for almost 2 years, thoroughly enjoyed it (only changed it to get a tweaked Turbo).
One tip :-
If its just a weekend car and it's not used every weekend I would recommend getting a Battery charger/conditioner (Carcoon do a good one) to try and ensure you don't get starting problems ; 2+ weeks drain from the alarm/immobiliser could discharge the battery sufficient to make the 3Litre lump reluctant to start.
You could also get a Dis-car-nect which I found very useful on all 3 944's I have owned.

Clive,

Sounds like a good tip. Luckily, I've got power in my garage too.

Cheers,
Bryan

Clive,

Sorry I missed your email but it looks like you've gone ahead and got one. Now you have got it why not treat it to a run out and come and see us at the Bristol group or come to The Avenue Drivers Club event in Queen Square Bristol, yours can be the 3rd Red Cabriolet we have.

All the best with the new purchase. If you need advice then the 924/944 forum is the place to get it, or drop me a mail. I'm not too far from you as I live near Wotton-under-Edge, J14 M5.

Mick

Mick,

Sounds like there's a nice friendly community on here. Do you have the dates for the events you mentioned?

Cheers,
Bryan

The Bristol region meeting is 1st Tuesday of the month, so the next is 1st May. We meet at The Fox in Easter Compton, J17 M5 (Cribbs Causeway), from 8pm. Normally about 20 - 30 attend.

The Avenue Drivers Club is 2nd Sunday of the month (last Sunday), the next one is 13th May in Queen Square, Bristol, from 9am to 12ish.

The car looks great and if it drives as good as it looks you will have a lot of fun. Looking at the advert it seems you've purchased a very rare car - 6 cylinder engine?!

Be good to see you at a central meet one night if you can make it

All the best

Paul
