Hello All

Bought an 86 944 and just got it home and tucked away in the garage.

It's guards red or is supposed to be looks more pink at the moment.

Will add photos in the daylight tomorrow.

It's got issues and has been stood for a few years but looks solid.
Apart from a dead battery most annoying thing so far is the passenger door won't open, can't get the door card off to get at the lock either.

I'm sure it's the first of many issues but am looking forward to fixing her up, got to be ready for my daughters 21st (2 years yet).

Am in the Warrington area.

Will be looking for loads of advice and friendly words when I get stuck.

Pm maybe it is more red than pink.

Hi, welcome to the forum. :)

Your pink paint needs some oils putting back into it to make it red again.

A wash, followed by paint cleaner, then clay bar, polish, then wax, should have it looking a lot brighter.

We need to see pictures 8)

Do what Sean says except I would :-
Full soak & Wash Top to bottom, followed by Clay bar, then paint cleaner, paint polish, then wax.

(ie the full monty [oops Maguiars]) and you will soon have one in the Fastest Colour! :)

Sorry for going slightly off topic but I am curious.
Thanks for that Sean, no wonder it took me about 10 hours to fully clay the 944's I've had :oops: .
Mind you I did get a 2nd in a SYNN concours with just the clay bar on the White Cabriolet (it took so long I didn't have time for the rest of the stuff :lol: )
Did get a 1st the next year started 2 weeks earlier 9took 30 hours to do the 3 step process, but then I'm a slow worker. 8)

I was only following the Meguiar's instructions :- Taken from their FAQ on Clay Bar.
"After you've washed and dried your paintwork run your fingertips over the surface. It is likely that you will feel small imperfections. These are contaminants bonded to the paint that cannot be removed with washing alone. Typically these would be tree sap, remnants of bird lime, industrial fallout or even paint overspray. Clay is a fast and safe way to remove contaminants that have bonded to your paintwork which can't be shifted by washing alone. Meguiar's recommend that you tear about 1/3rd of the clay bar off and work it in your hands until soft. Mould the clay to a 5cm disc, spray the Quik Detailer onto clean, dry paintwork and glide the clay through the lubricant using finger tip pressure. It will remove all of the bonded contaminant, giving you a finish as smooth as glass."

Have they advised you different or did you just do it that way?

At least it's coming along, door now open and headlights working, just need to order some brakes!

The clue is in the FAQ, "clay is a Fast and safe way". Clay should be used to remove what is left after washing or/and paint cleaning, before you apply polish and seal with a wax. :D

With the new products that Meguiars have recently added to the range, I would use Ultimate Compound instead of the traditional paint cleaner. This will soften swirls as well as clean the environmental contaminants from the surface.

Remove door card off drivers side so I could see what was what, then realised I could get the top of the door card off.

After much poking around managed to get a screwdriver through a small hole opposite the lock mechanism which tipped the lock.

Now I have done it once would take 1 minute next time as was really easy once I found the right spot.

Will take photos if anyone needs it for the future
