I just joined the forum yesterday, and already posted a couple of photos of my car in the 924, 944 and 968 sub-forum, before I even noticed this thread! I thought I ought to pop in and properly introduce myself though...

I've got a 1988 944S that I've had for about five years now. It had been neglected and pretty heavily thrashed by a previous owner, and the rather unscrupulous dealer from whom I bought it didn't disclose the numerous problems that I would be inheriting. Within a week one of the rear half-shafts sheared clean through, fortunately while I was parking, rather than doing 70 on the motorway. I got it repaired at a local specialist (the excellent Oak Tree Garage in Newton Poppleford) but they told me that the other half-shaft was pretty much trashed as well, so that had to go too. They also told me that the required 100k front-end rebuild and belt replacement, which I had been told by the dealer had been done, had in fact not been done. The car ended up costing me £1500 for repairs within the first two weeks, which was half what I'd paid for it in the first place! I'll certainly never buy another car from that dealer...

Nevertheless, five years and many more bills later, what was once looking like a tired old banger is back in tip-top form, runs like a dream, starts first time every time, and has repaid some much-needed care and attention with five years of virtually trouble-free and highly enjoyable motoring. There are still a few small jobs to do, but I'm a very happy Porsche owner.

Prior to getting the 944 I had a series of three 924s that sadly didn't fare so well. The first was written off when an idiot in a Citroen BX drove into the side of it, the second was stolen and never recovered, and the third was nearly ruined by a botched repair from an incompetent local garage, and was eventually sold p/x for the 944.

As for myself, I'm a freelance writer and photographer living and working in Devon. I've previously worked as editor on several photography magazines, and I'm currently working on a series of guidebooks on digital photography and image editing.

Thanks very much for the kind welcome! I'll be joining the club too, just as soon as we've got Christmas out of the way, so hopefully I should be able to find a few local meet-ups or track days.

If anyone in the East Devon area wants any high quality car photos I'd be happy to oblige, as long as you don't mind your car appearing in a photography magazine...
