Buying 964 & U/G for Track use

Post by AH 1953 »

I currently run a 996 Targa which I use mostly for track days, I am looking to upgrade to something that is more of a “track” car, but still OK for occasional road use.
I am planning on buying a 964 and upgrading it to something that is quicker than my 996.

I am trying to decide what is possible, I have a budget of 25k (once I have sold the 996), which I assume would buy the car with approx 12-10k to spend on upgrading.

My current ideas of upgrades are:

Possible full Respray
upgrade the engine to 3.8 (+ barrels, pistons etc)
sports suspension with adjustable dampers
anti roll bars
turbo brakes
half cage
sports (?) exhaust – but mustn’t exceed noise limits for track use (unless switchable)
bucket seats & harness
+ other upgrades as ai think of them.

I have an excellent local Porsche specialist, who will do whatever work I require, and his costs are very reasonable, i just need to decide what is practicable.

This is the first time I have ever embarked on this kind of project so all suggestions are welcome, from anyone who has done something similar or anyone who has any useful suggestions they would be much appreciated. I am especially interested to know how likely is it that i can get more performance out of the 964 without going the Turbo route.

Thanks
sam

Hi and welcome, sounds an interesting project, and I wish you well. I do have a concern however, I presume you have additional funds to top up your budget? I am sure you have researched the costs of a decent '64, and the selling prices of 996's
