Hello. Can any of you clear up this issue. A friend of a friend says that they purchased a ‘last of line’ Porche model brand new in 2016. He claims that it is powered by an IN-LINE 6 cylinder engine. I have said that Porche have never made such a production model/ engine certainly in modern times. Can he be correct. Is there a Porche model with an in-line/straight six cylinder? Thank you all for your time and interest in this.

Maybe he means "flat 6" - there are plenty of those.

Thanks IanK. This is how it all started. I’ve never owned a Porch but am a tech-head! Claims of a recent model Porche with an in-line 6 engine. Do you agree with me that whilst Porche are arguably the worlds pre-eminent maker of the FLAT 6 or 4 (apologies Subaru) they have never made a commercial IN-LINE 6? To the best of my schoolboy knowledge an in-line 6 is not as robust as a flat 6 and is ‘top-heavy’ vs low-Centre of gravity in a sports car. Plus any 6 cylinder IN-LINE engines would struggle to fit transversely across an engine bay in a front wheel drive combination. Hence my conclusion that not only have Porche not produced an in-line 6, it would run counter to engineering logic to go down that route? Thanks you could win me a 50p bet !! :lol

Correct as far as I am concerned. there have been plenty of flat 6's and the odd V6 (Cayanne) but no straight 6's in production cars.

Nothing wrong with a straight 6 though - had one in a 3 series BMW and it was ultra smooth - no vibration whatsoever and thats without balance shafts. The problem is they are longer so no good if you want a low front end.
