Worth having a fresh look at it Lindsay. My renewal from 2gether insurance (remember they were flavour of the month once) came through at £180. It was a £30 increase over last year and they had ditched all the add-ons.... breakdown cover, personal injury cover etc etc. They had not bothered to re-broke (i.e. look around for the best deal) and just assumed that I would renew - there was even a telephone message left that actually said "give us a ring John and we'll get this renewed" - how presumptuous.... or is that arrogant.
I did my usual e-mail thing and got a quote at £140.
Another example - My boss is away at the moment and I am running his business for him. The insurance called on Wednesday to say that it was due renewal Thursday and that he normally just renews. Premium last year was £919, this year was £926. A quick chat deternined that they had not tried to re-broke and that the 'normally' was just last year as he had only joined them in 2011. I said that I had read the e-mailed policy documents (I had done) and that the premium was actually £891 and how could they justify the £35 policy fee they had added on as all they had done was call and ask for renewal. She knocked the £35 fee off. Therefore the insurance this year is actually £28 cheaper than last year.... every little helps as they say.
Got exactly the same as previous year, breakdown, legal etc, but with agreed value up by £5k, now £282
Always, and I mean always, go back and negotiate with them at renewal.
