What products/methods can you guys recommend to degrease and clean up the shabby looking engine compartment in my 944 S2 Cabby?

After seeing Lindsay's 944 engine bay at the NEC, I feel shamed into cleaning mine up.

Thinking about painting the camshaft cover red as well probably with VHT paint. Is this a good make or are there better ones?

Don't think I'll bother cleaning the Boxster's engine as I can't find the bloody thing.

I've always used gunk on to a warm engine & then washed it off, have just bought the greener, more pleasant Bilt Hamber equivalent but ain't tried it yet.
TBH paint for the cam cover doesn't have to be VHT. I've used Halfords normal touch in aerosols car paints before & laquered them after. If they get too hot for the paint then you have bigger issue than the paint! It does need to go onto an immaculately clean surface though. Getting the grease & gunge off is by far the biggest issue. Be careful if you get it powder coated, if powder coating gets inside the heat will make it flake & it blocks oil ways!

Bring it up one weekend and we'll have a go at it.

Thanks a lot Sean. :thumbleft:

I'll drive it to the monthly meeting next Monday so you can have a quick look to see what state it's in.

VHT paint works well, as does Hammerite Aerosol

What would look good is
Prepare your cam cover and give the lettering area a few coats of bright silver
Then mask off the lettering and use VHT Black crinkle paint (like Ferrari cam covers)

I like the idea of the crackle paint, but I think I'll stick with red (like the F430 below) to contrast the grey body.

Cool

Just a note that when the engine is hot the red isn't so bright

I've got red crackle on my spider cam covers
It's been on there for 8 years now and really needs re painting

Autoglym engine bay cleaner is ideal to removing the dirt/oil e.t.c from the engine bay area.

Just spray the pruduct onto a cool/cold engine and work in with a brush, then rinse with cold water.
