Hi all,

I'm looking to buy some forged cs wheels for my 944 '87 Turbo (220ps, abs offset)

Can someone tell me part codes to check for?

Secondly, what's the recommended tyre size?

I can see the wheel sizes appear to be:
http://944turbo.net/?p=367

Year(s)
1988-1989
16×7.5″ Club Sport (65.0mm)
16×9″ Club Sport (60.0mm)

I'm currently running the standard:

1987-1988
16×7″ Phone Dials (52.3mm)
16×8″ Phone Dials (52.3mm)

I have nearly-new Continental SportContacts on my Teledials:

Front: 205/55ZR16
Rear: 225/50ZR16

I suspect the tyres are too narrow to swap over, so I'll probably store the CSs and run the teledials until they need new rubber.

Thoughts?

Thanks Sean!

Seller has mysteriously disappeared. Makes me wonder if my immediate agreement to the price made him think "oh, I can try charging more elsewhere!"

Ho hum, fingers crossed he comes back to me.

Hi. I have these wheels on my 944 S2. I can tell you that the fronts are 7j not 7.5j. I've seen this on a few websites and I'm not sure where it comes from, but it's possible that 7.5j wheel was made for the 928.

Part numbers I can't tell you for sure (I don't have the car at the moment) but I seem to remember the rear 9 number started with 928 and the front was 944. Indicating again that the front on a 928 was a different size.

One thing I notice on mine is that they do not have the numbers either side of the valve. This is usually an indication that they are replicas but I put it down to them being made by Fuchs and that they are forged. The rear (inside) of the wheels are clearly marked by the production process (the hammer marks) but the front is not. My guess is that something had to be done to the front of the wheels to remove the hammer marks and that also meant that the numbers couldn't be on the front.

My wheels have unfortunately been painted and don't have their original anodised finish. If you're a perfectionist you'll probably want the original finish, but I'm not sure how many of these wheels there around to choose from. So far I haven't found anywhere that can return them to the original finish.

Tyre sizes on mine (7 and 9) are 225/50 and 245/45, I believe this were the porsche advised sizes.

http://www.944silverrose.co.uk/technicial-information.html

When I got my tyres it was only really Continental doing both sizes for front and rear. Since then Pirelli have started to make them, but I've not found anyone selling them. I've contacted Pirelli to confirm and they should be available to anyone wanting them so it's probably an email or phone call to the reseller as none seem to have them on their websites.

I hope someone will jump in and correct any of this if it is nonsense.

Thanks for the advice :)

Incidentally the seller says they have Michelin tyres which isn't a deal breaker but its a shame, since Sean advises I do need a wider tyre for the 9 inch rims

Hi Chris

Out of interest how much was he wanting for the set of CS wheels?

I have a spare set of 4 genuine 944 CS wheels that I might consider selling. These have been refurbished and are stored in my garage. 2 x 7J and 2 x 9J

Oh Hi!

He said £500 which I accepted, then he disappeared off the face of the earth because I think he realised the going rates is nearer £600.

I say this for the sake of full disclosure. We are a club of like minded people after all :-D

...so I'm still looking but hoping for £500 ;-)

I wouldn't sell these for £600 sorry.

Good luck with your search :)

No worries, I figured it was too good to be true!

I know they often get ruined by painting them so maybe someone will have some ruined ones in otherwise good condition

You have to be careful when refurbishing them. These weren't dipped or powder coated, they were rubbed down then 2 pack primed and then 2 coats of paint on top with a laquer finish. :)

Ruined might be a bit strong (mine are painted! ). It's just the finish was originally anodised and some folk prefer originality. My feeling though is that these are getting pretty hard to find with the original finish.

If anyone knows where you can get alloy wheels anodised I'd love to know though as it would be tempting to get mine returned to their original look.

I looked at getting them re anodised and it is very expensive and doesn't guarantee the finish will last long either.

I was quoted £800 to get 5 wheels done!

Yes "ruined" was a little tongue in cheek ;)

I'd love to be a purist but I know I can't afford it. Looking right to the majority of people and keeping it period is good enough for me, but then my car is a warmed up 220 so it'll never really be a Turbo S. I wouldn't fit D90s on an E reg for example... 8)

How much would you take, out of interest?

I need new suspension to tighten up the ride more than I need flashy wheels if I am perfectly honest, especially since I have nearly new tyres to wear out too :)

...so just out of interest! I know prices keep shooting up for anything 944 Turbo related these days.

The previous picture was the wrong one

These were the wheels after being refurbished.

I would sell all 5 for £1000 or 4 for £800
