Post subject:  944 turbo, what tyres?

Hi all

Got a car today, 87 944 turbo and it has some cheapo rubber on it so will be the first port of change. Its on 17's staggered set up and is probably chipped. What I can't seem to find out is what are the oem tyre specs? I am looking at goodyear f1 assymetrics 2 as I have these on my 335i and they are quite good and review well. I am targeting a y speed rating, but can any one suggest what load index i should have and whether xl rated tyres are necessary or a risk.

Also, any recommendations for other tyres would be greatly appreciated. The car will see some limited track time, poss 2 - 3 per annum, but mostly road trips, touring etc. Thanks in advance.

This might help viewtopic.php?f=25&t=15508&hilit=+tyres#p103465
(saves me re-iterating my post on the subject.) :)

Thanks, I had read that in my research and it was helpful. Do you have any guidance on the load rating or XL questions which weren't covered in that thread?

Well I went for n3 rated michelin ps2's in the end and by god they are grippy. Had them fitted Wednesday. Was dropping the clutch last weekend and laying 11's on the old tyres. Tried it with the michelins and the bloody things just gripped and threw the car down the road, at the expense of the clutch - what a stink, wont be doing that too often me thinks.

This possibly isn't that useful if you want to stick to the non standard ride / handling with those bigger rims, and you're also looking for trackday tyres but...

My car is on standard 16 inch teledials. Having fitted just under £400 worth of ContiSport Contacts (N1) on all 4 corners I will never go back to anything less. Utterly amazing. I've recently returned from a 2266 mile tour of the Alps via Stuttgart and Lake Garda, and the car was absolutely everything I wanted it to be on the passes and on the autobahn.

Good luck!

The car came with 17"s and seems to ride fine to me. Mind you my other ride is an E90 3 series and even with non run flats it crashes about the place. The 944 is like a pillow in comparison and mine has bilstein coilovers as well. I have stopped bracing over speed humps!!! For what it's worth my mechanic recommended the michelins, which kinda helped me make a decision as i was torn between goodyear f2's (on my beemer) and michelins and contis. It's all new to me, only two weekends in and still learning, but I love the drive - so low and alive, rattles and all.

The Michelins do seem to last quite some time on any car I have had them on. I know that on my 944 the fronts (N2 spec Michelin PS2s) lasted probably the best part of 15k on the front going by the previous MOTs.

This time around I tried the PS3s. So far so good :).

Miches are my fav expect 8/10 k from the rears, but iv going to try Nokian Z G2 Tyres next at 285 wide everything else is 600/800 a pair

Figured with the width I could lose some grip/ performance.
