Does anyone have one of these? If you so do you know whether it a) works with the iPod Touch, and b) what do you consider the optimum location in the car for the iPod?

I have one in my 944. It definitely does not work with the iPod Touch. It only works with quite old iPods—I use third generation ones, with the old black and white screen and a row of four buttons above the scroll wheel. As the Becker website and the iPod kit manual say: “Compatible with 3rd and 4th generation iPods®, Mini and Photo iPods®.”

I drilled a few small holes so that I could mount my iPod in the car’s central armrest, completely hidden from view but still accessible to unplug and update the songs on it. Not sure where would be good in a different Porsche!

 I was moments from selling my brand-new and unused Becker Remote Kit for iPod (not compatible with iPod Touch) on eBay, when I noticed a sticker on the outside of the box noting "... 3rd, 4th, & 5th generation, nano, mini, photo & touch"
So it looks like this one is an upgraded interface poprock - sorry to have wasted your time with that question!

I'd still like to hear from anybody who's running their ipod in a 996 or 997. I'd like to know whether its possible to fix the iPod under the front lid (will the cable stretch that far or can it be extended?) or in the locking cubby box in the cabin (can a hole be cut on the inside of the box and the cable run under the transmission tunnel trim panels? )

[15mins later]
Doing some research I find a company called Brodit that specialise in in-car mounts for hand-held equipment. They offer two interesting devices.

1. A bracket that snaps around the centre console offering a flat angled mounting plate for...

2. a cradle for and iPod that holds both the device and a captive cable (not supplied).

I think I'll give these a try.

Yup Brodit been around for a while & I've known lots of people use them on a variety of cars. Saves holes drilled in the centre console which I see on so many cars!

Wow, looks like Becker have updated their iPod kit then! Great news.

I had a really hard time sourcing another old enough iPod to use with mine when my original ‘car use’ iPod went belly-up recently. If I’d known about Becker’s update I’d have just bought a new connection kit and saved myself the hassle. Shame they haven’t bothered to tell anyone by updating their website to match.

I don't have a Becker unit but Kenwood head unit and Ipod adaptor the adaptor I mounted behind the glove box and keep my Ipod in the glove box with the connector cable exiting to the rear through a small hole I drilled into the back corner, the I had to keep the Ipod adaptor relatively close to the head unit as the cable was only short but the Ipod connector cable to the adaptor is just the same as you get with your Ipod so long enough to reach into the glove box and allow me to remove the Ipod when I want to update it. The Kenwood system I have is a few years old and states it only works with Ipod Mini, Nano 2nd & 3rd gen plus Ipod classic, I tried it with my SOns Ipod touch and it still connected but just lost some never used functionality.

Think there is a firmware update for the Kenwood to bring it in line with the latest mp3 players not so sure if there is one for the Becker might be worth checking.

Update. The bracket turned out to be slightly too small to clip in the iPod cable - the terminal at the end of the Becker iPod adaptor is around 120mm deep, whereas the bracket is design to allow a plug around 80mm deep (the size of the plug at the end of your regular iPod cable), This meant that my iPod wouldn't fit into the bracket snugly. Between us the tech' and I abandoned that idea. Instead he ran the cable under the gear shift & handbrake trim into the centre cubby-box and that works very nicely. The brackets will be appear on a well-known internet auction site near you very soon.
