Its amazing to see pictures of that framework .All the books I ve got dont show any of that.Got some pics of the "elevons" which they stuck on the tail end to try and make it handle. a lever system altered the angle of the rear wing as the rear end rose at speed, which brought the back end down again to give back the traction. Looking forward to your next set of pictures! :D

Ah, you posted those pics as I was writing my previous post.I ll tell you what, you have stumbled on a most amazing bloke,he really knows what he is doing and he is obviously a serious Porsche fan,and also quite a brilliant engineer to be able to make that framework. Is he getting the bodywork made for him or doing it himself? also what engine is he going to use? The flat six was the original engine(2.2l) but when the rules changed they stuck a couple of extra cylinders on it and upped it to 3l. That was the 908/02 spyder. In the 1960s the pace of development was ferocious and relentless.Porsche were determined to achieve the ultimate goal which was victory at Le Mans, but it was 1970 before they made it happen. In the 908 coupe you could see the beginnings of the 917,in fact they had the same rear end stability or instability problems which were dealt with in different ways, the "elevons " on the 908 gave way to the rear upsweep of the bodywork on the 917 which eventually made it work, the earlier long tail versions being dangerous and ineffective.Brian Redman was summoned to drive the first 917 and described the experience as a nightmare, but eventually they sorted the aerodynamics and the car went on to win many races and two Le Mans.Ferdinand Piech was the man behind these cars, and he was totally dedicated to winning Le Mans and putting the Porsche name amongst the greats. In fact Porsche won Le Mans 16 times, more than any other manufacturer and I have been fortunate to be there for 8 of those victories.Keep us posted re the 908 coupe project! :)

Hiya, he was busy working on the 550 spyder this week so there wasn't much to update on the 908 side,so just posted a couple of pics of the rear upright and the pattern he made for it from wood!! (The red one).
I asked about the engine and he is going to use the 2.7 rs engine from his white 911 pictured as 908 engines are in the $100,000 + territory, he's looking into making his rs lump into a 3ltr to make it that more accurate!
All the body moulds and jigs were built by him,and all the glass-work is being done by himself, all the machining and patterns have/are being done by himself.
The body is hopefully being started to be "laid up" withing the next few weeks, the next thing to do is place the chassis into the mould to get the correct angle for the screen hoop so that should be good to see!
Ill take pics of the moulds there is dozens, its unbelievable this guy has done all this by himself in his spare time with his own money.

Just found some production numbers for the 908.The coupes were the series 1 cars, chassis numbers 908-000 -908-031,32 cars in all, more than I thought ! Series 2 cars, the 908/02, chassis numbers 001-028 and series 3 cars ,the 908/3 003-013 making 71 altogether plus the two 909 "Bergspyders".At the same time Porsche were getting the 917 under way and built 25 "Production" cars for homologation purposes for the new up to 5 litre capacity class. They certainly were busy in 1968!! :)

Good searching!
Some of the 908/2 coupe chassis was also chopped around and made into longtails and spyders and flounders. The 908/3 was a alley chassis and completely different.
The story of the 25 917's is a interesting and funny one.apparently they had everyone in the factory building them even office staff, they was just frown together to get them in. When they was signed off they had to take them all apart again and build them properly.lol

Iv have some more pics to upload as I'm popping up there tomorrow for a cup of tea and a chat.He has been laying up the front half of the body shell this week so it should get quite exciting in the next thew weeks! fingers crossed.

Well it would be the series 1 cars which were altered into longtails or "langhecks",with Le Mans and Daytona in mind. The 908/02 ie series 2 cars would have been the spyders and flounders and as you say the series 3 cars 908/3 were different again. There is a famous photo of the 25 917 s lined up waiting for the FISA inspectors in a few of my books. Apparently they wouldnt have made it to the end of the road had they been required to run them but their appearance was enough to allow them to compete.Looking forward to your next pics. :)
