Evening all. Has anyone ever experienced this? Drove onto my drive, left the car ticking over whilst unlocking the garage door, got back in the car to an awful noise - definitley a 'clackety clack.' No lights on dash, car still ticking over ok, no smoke, no fluids on drive. Immediately switched the car off and rolled it into the garage. Been to frightened to switch it on again since. Have had the engine cover off today and got underneath, but nothing obvious. I'm thinking (well hoping actually) that it might be a bearing on one of the pulleys, no idea which one though. Anyway, does anyone have any advice? Also, does anyone have a favourite mechanic in the Milton Keynes area because I am not going to drive it anywhere until it's fixed in case of further damage!! Only had the car 3 weeks - first Porsche as well. I'm feeling a bit down today as a result as I'm not a thrasher, just been enjoying the top off motoring! Thanks in advance. Steve. |

In order of repair cost... Cat heat shield (a tinny rattle from the exhaust area) Water pump (often louder in the cockpit than outside) Dual Mass Flywheel (often noisy on tickover, especially on shutting down making a "clack clack" noise when you do so) Hydraulic lifter (more of a tick tick tick noise when its ticking over, louder in the wheel arches) Intermediate Shaft (a clack clack clack noise, quite a nasty noise) Probably not a good idea to run it.. get the RAC to recover it to someone who really knows Boxsters. Shame your not closer, the RAC/AA would recover it here, but its a long way to come to collect it. |

Thanks Jon. Looks like the intermediate shaft has gone. Needs a strip down and repair, it's with a local specialist at the mo' just waiting for the damage to be assessed both to the car and my wallet! |

In case anyone is interested, it was the Intermediate Shaft that had failed. Luckily I switched off before catastrophic damage had been done, which is a joke really because the whole kit and caboodle has left me seriously out of pocket. Due to pick up the car tomorrow, supposedly now running 'like a new car.' Unfortunately the whole incident has tarnished my experience as I had been looking for a summer of top down motoring, all that glorious weather and no Porsche! Not only that but the wife hasn't spoken to me since I told her how much it was going to cost! ![]() |

Not good news ![]() ![]() looking through my recipts the RMS was done 5k ago so hopefully that will be fine for a while so just really the IMS to sweat about - is there any preventative measures that can be taken for IMS failure or is it just look out for the noise ? |

Ewan - I'm told that it just goes, luckily my car was just ticking over on the drive so I switched it off straight away supposedly limiting the damage. Had I been cruising along or accelerating at the time .............. new engine. I'm also told this happens to about 10% of Porsches generally that have this engine type including the 996 from about mid 90's onwards. Not sure about current models though. Brucey - We're talking thousands, but I did get the dual mass fly wheel and clutch replaced as well along with a new coil, mass air sensor, air/oil crossover and a few other bits and bobs that have a tendency to fail on this model type. Seemed like a good idea as the engine was out anyway. Also had new crank bearings, timing chains, shaft, upgraded shaft bearings, full heads off dekoke and so on as a part of the rebuild. So it all adds up. Seems to be running pretty smoothly at the moment but I'm obviously a bit dubious about everything and need to get my trust back with this vehicle methinks!!!! I did tell the previous owner who seemed a pretty genuine kind of guy, but he didn't offer to reimburse any of what I paid him! Yeah like I would have of course! I think he was just relieved it wasn't him! All I can say is thank fcuk for 0% credit cards! I cannot tell you how p***** off I am! |

I can fully sympathise with the cold shoulder treatment from the other half. I've had to put up with that a lot in the last few years! You're right though - it does knock your confidence in the car with regard to reliability. Anyway, you seem to have done some good preventative maintenance there and hopefully things should be better in the long run. Ben ![]() |
