I'm a worry wart at the best of times so this is doing me no good. 99 2.5 986, when in traffic or stood still the temperature seams to be creeping up. The fans are kicking in but don't seem to reduce the temperature at all. When i am through the traffic and off and running (50 mph for 5 mins) the temperature gets back to normal.

Am i looking at a water pump on its way out?

The temp gauge in 986/996 is driven from the DME not just a sensor & is very inaccurate. Probably to stop people panicking. They do get pretty hot, is the engine bay fan working? It is probably OK but you can get it checked out by someone with a reader which shows true temp & also whether the fans work.
