Classic Car Road Tax.

Many of our cars will be over 25 years old soon but will not be eligible for classic car tax. Signing this e-petition might give us the chance of classic car tax in the future:

There are concerns by some forums that having a zero rated RFL for classic cars could be the start of limiting their road use to annual miles, days of week or even hours of a day. Therefore for some who still use theirs as dailys would be forced out of or off the road and into modern euro boxes.

My proposal is simple

Many classic car insurance policies limit their mileage anyway. So if you have say limited to 5000 miles classic insurance policy then you should be able to apply for a zero rated RFL, which may or may not be limited mileage as well. The Government will lose minimal revenue from RFL. Driver still 'pays to play' when they fill up usually on premium fuels and Government get their fuel duties/VAT. The money saved by the driver will usually be spent on their hobby anyway, the classic car, and support further classic car parts/service industry so every ones a winner!!

If you use your classic for daily use/commuting then you are likely to be covered by a regular unlimited mileage insurance policy. Therefore you pay regular RFL rate and enjoy your classic any time, any place, any where. Government still pillage your wallet for full RFL and VAT/Duties on higher insurance and fuel usage. They keep maximum cash in their coffers. The increased mileage requires increased spend on classic car parts/service industry and again, every ones a winner!!

I don't think the goverment would limit mileage, or if they did, I think they would probably make it that after a certain mileage you get charged normal road tax, which would be fair because the whole argument for free road tax on classic cars is they they rarely go on the road.

I forgot to Sorn the classic car my dad left me this year, its a 1971 so gets free road tax anyway, but the cheeky buggers still charged me the same fine as if it was road tax liable.

The main thing that gets my goat is that my 25 year old and older cars clock up very little, if any miles a year, but the road tax is at the full rate, yet the carbon footprint will be much less (due to them hardly ever driving and producing carbon) than a group A 2003 onwards car which gets free road tax based on carbon footprint.
