Post subject:  928 to a Boxster...Ssssshhh!

Hi All, dont tell the 928 guys, but im secretly looking for a boxster.... Been out in the 928 today (first time in a while) its a great car but Ive had this for a couple of years now and I do fancy something different..like a Boxster! Ive seen a nice early 2.5, everyone seems to say go for a bigger engine etc..speed, speed etc but i would probably go for good quality auto (because Im lazy) - (dont mind a manual) but i do like a good turn of speed if I need it etc...any thoughts? Hiya mate, I've got a 99 S plate Boxster 2.5 and previously owned a 944S. I know I haven't had to go through the dramatic reduction in engine size like you would but I did go from a classic to a modern and what I will say is the Boxster is a really nice car to drive and I personally think really looks the part (same front end as a 996 911). The engine is right behind your napper and sounds really nice, and a biggie for any previous 928 owner is THE AIRCON WORKS REALLY WELL! :lol:
If your ever in Manchester before you decide to buy one just give me a shout and I'll let you have a spin mate.

This will be interesting...

I appreciate the aircon point but wonder whether you will be able to accept the lack of HP and Torque ?

Personally I would never do it as I like the "look" and "sound" of the 928 too much and I dont think the Boxster looks as good or is as unique as nowdays there are a LOT of Boxsters around and very cheap as well...

If you do go for it, I would be very interested with a comparison between the 2 cars in your opinion...

LOL!! :D Thanks Brucey for the kind offer - not often Manchester way though! The 928 is a great car Brett and the look and sound are most definatley unique. Just fancy a change?

I guess ill have to drive a boxster to determine "the power/grin factor" etc. I just think its the best all rounder of the "modern" bunch available on my kind of budget - Z3M, TT, SL, s2000 etc

Oh well, a nice weekend ahead to think about it....

Hi Rob :)

I have driven boxsters and a lot of other 911 variants and my main objection was the noise...or LACK of it...they all sound "wimpy" compared to a 928....

They are definitely a more modern car and handle well, but somehow are not just the same...lol

If I had to guess...i doubt you will change away from a 928....

Trouble with the 2.5 is it has no torque. My 25 year old 944 can toast it. The Auto is among the worst cars i've ever driven. Sorry if you've got one! An MX5 has more go & will be cheaper to run! Go for the 2.7 it's altogether more grown up. Avoid the cheap ones as they haven't been looked after & will cost loads to get up to standard. I would say a cared for '44 is a better bet! Boxsters were not built to last. I could tell you what Wayne Scholfield thinks of them but it may start a riot! 928's can be problematic but they have an engine! 8)

The Boxster is a great car for some wind in your hair fun and relatively trouble free motoring.

Not sure which MX5 JJ is refering to, an MX5 of 1990's vintage topped out at 130mph the 2011 2.0 sport version ain't any quicker. A 2.5 Boxster will leave them both at the lights, or on the twisty stuff.

There are plenty of cars out there with a good history for the right money.

The 2.7 is probably the one I would go for because it has a bit more grunt. The 2.5 did suffer a few failures early on, I would have thought if an engine was going to fail it would have done so by now.

It's not all horse-manure Andrew.

We've got a 2007 MX5 we've had from new. We looked at this http://dealerservices.autotrader.co.uk/ ... d-cars.htm a couple of months ago. very bright, but it felt cheap inside, instantly reminding us of our daughter's Renault Clio. In fact it's a reflection of the car in that it's still not been sold after all this time and has been reduced almost £2000.

Personally I can't see any advantage in owning one over the MX5. The 0-60 time is negligible (just how many people actually drive like that from the lights anyway?), and at the end of the day you can only do 70mph in the UK. If you could drive along where the Boxster's top speed was an advantage, the Mazda would pass the Boxster every time the Boxster stopped for petrol. I would say that I agree with JJ (and disagree with Sean) in that the MX5 is probably better than the Boxster on the twisty roads - if it wasn't then the Boxster would be consistently voted 'best sports car' by the motoring press instead of the MX5. When one of the Top Gear boys said "what sports car does a bloke drive then?", Hammond said "an MX5". As for running costs - the first set of tyres lasted almost 50000 miles, servicing is cheap, and it averages around 36mpg. After 72000 miles we have spent nothing on it except for tyres and brakes. Wasn't it you who posted a thread recently about the expense of your Boxster tyres......

It's each to his own Andrew, therefore JJ is entitled to his opinion that 'Boxsters are for girls'.... an opinion I share, and would add 'and boys who want to be girls'. Maybe you should have a go in a Mazda one day - you might be surprised.

Disclaimer - It's each to his own. I'm not biased in any way - I just don't like Boxsters.

Sean - any convertible is good for some wind in your hair fun..... for those of you with hair!

It's each to his own, but having driven both the MX5 and Boxster 2.5 the Boxster is quicker and better planted.

A girly girl picks the MX5, us lads who are in touch with our femanine side and a bit camp choose the Boxster. :lol:

Sorry Brucey but it's getting a bit quiet on here. :wink: The Boxster that was on the fleet was an automatic & well looked after by Hartech. It was half the car of my 944. The S also has no torque. I just don't like cars without torque. Torque ='s authority on the road. On track you want HP. My problem with the Boxster is that it's 20 years newer in design but weres the progess? My '44 can match it & beat it out of slow corners & roundabouts! The 2.7 is well worth the extra. Boxsters are cheap to buy but parts are expensive & they need them. sidbounce was after an Auto & the Boxster Auto is pants. Sorry. 2.7 or 3.2 Manuel much better. Or just buy a 944 & take the roof out! I bet my '44 is on the road long after the Boxsters have gone to the scrap yard. They just arn't as well made as they used to be. Or is that the Progress........
