Today I am having my front wheel bearings changed on my 944S2 as the NS is making a noise so thought best to get both done then at least I have a matched new pair.
Phoned my local Porsche specialist for a price (won't name names but in Teeside and does a lot of racing in Porsche Cup). The price was £25/set for bearings, same as Porcheshop more or less except they wanted to add VAT as well. Then after being told it was about 1 hour per wheel imagine the shock when they told me it was £150+vat + £50 for the bearings +vat so a grand total of £235, that's over £75/hr for labour I know they are good but that is extortion.
I am having them supplied and fitted by a local garage who does my MOTs and also replaced all the brake pipes on my 924S plus 2 front discs so I good experience of them. They are doing the bearing job for £130 still £50 for bearings but more reasonable labour rates.
I mean it's not like I was asking the other garage to replace a camshaft or change my belts which is quite specialist this is inner and outer bearings for goodness sake. I would have done them myself but couldn't face not being able to get the old race's out and being stuck with no way of getting the car to a repair shop.
Local garage is in Middlesbrough called Autoenterprise and although it doesn't look much I have always had good service and will go back for most types of work. Also noticed a few times they have had 911s in for work or major bodywork so others must have the same opinion as me.
