Years ago I had an early manual 928. I was quite young and didn’t have the experience to understand how special it was. It was Lhd and they were dirt cheap because of the Lhd. The Lhd was the overriding factor in the driving experience, so I never really appreciated the manual aspect until I got my Auto S4 last year. Don’t get me wrong, I like my Auto S4 a lot, but keep thinking, if only it was a manual.
My S4 is a very early (January 01st hinged spoiler) 87 without a sunroof. It’s factory spec is nice and includes an Lsd. The car was supplied by Roger Clark Cars.
Don’t get me wrong, it needs a fair bit of love, like most do. But that’s the way I like to buy my cars.

So, I’ve found myself regularly looking up prices of Manual gearboxes, torque tubes, flywheels, etc, etc. I know the bulkhead is different along with loads of other stuff, but I’m getting more and more ‘into’ the idea the deeper I go.

I have even looked at a company that supplies a conversion to 6 speed Vette manual.

Help me! Am I bonkers?

not only will it cost you in the conversion, but also the fortune that will slip from the car as its no longer Original, the older these cars get the more originality comes into the deal,

If you never intend to sell it or trade it up then why not.

Hi :)

I was talking to Paul Anderson about this conversion a few years ago...
His view was, its worth doing if you want a manual BUT its a LOT of work... you have to be very mechanically minded to do it yourself...
Or pay someone like him to do it... I imagine he could give you an all in price if you wish...

Manuals are more sort after so if the conversion is done well , in theory SHOULD actually increase the value as long as you keep all paperwork etc...

All the best Brett :)

I took some extra driving tuition in my old 928 with John Cave from DriveTrain.

The first thing if said was not to use it in Drive unless stuck in traffic.
Best advise for any of the auto/tip porsches
Drive it like a manual and it'll be so much more fun. Watch that Rev limiter on overtakes though :D
