Hi All

So its five years this year and belt time, after 5 years of dam noisy Continentals I have ordered some Gates Belts,

I Ordered the Cam Belt from RTG Group on ebay, Gates 5094XS,

It arrived in a Grey Plastic bag no box, I contacted the seller and they said it was cheaper for them to post it with no box?????
they assure me that its brand new, I was not happy with this so they send me the box in the post???

So I have an Open Box that checks out to be a genuine box, with an internal shipping date for Ferrari's Piston Service in Preston for 24/07/2018, all good you may think, but alas no.

some things to take into consideration

I have no guarantee that this belt came out of this box.

The belt has a date code 3 45 7DS, no this equates to 3 = 3rd day, 45 = 45th week, 7 = year that could be 1997, 2007, 2017, (that's just stupid) and lastly DS = Dumfries Scotland.

So I call Gates Technical Support, they advise me not to use any belt that has been shipped without a box, mainly due to unknown damage.

they also could not put a year to the belt, and doubted that its been sitting on a shelf for 11 years, but told me to inspect it closely and if it looked good and clean and was not starting to Bio Degrade should be OK, I am not a fan of should be OK's

It would appear that talking to some others they are now putting 18DS on this years belts.

Think its going back to the seller for replacement

After Charlie Gates died the Gates family sold out to Tompkins. I worked for Gates during that time, and I wouldn't get too hung up on the Gates brand now.

It's a fair point Blade but what are the viable options given that the Conti belts are noisier than they should be. I'm currently running a new Conti and from cold it's quite loud. Does quieten when it heats up.

I think the factory cam belt setting is too tight when the engine is up to temp, I run mine slightly looser. The balance belt is a faff, too loose it whines, too tight it whines, I had to use a mirror on a stick to set mine. As for belts I'd still use Gates, but the last kit I bought from Promax didn't have any in it.

That does sound a bit dodgy... If it's any help mister-auto stocks gates timing and balance belts. They arrived in boxes and everything :)

Are there any options other than Gates or Conti?

How much is that belt now? I think it was 2 or 3 times the cost of a standard belt when the septics were getting excited about them. And no matching balance belt if I remember correctly.

No idea as I have not had a reply to my request for cost

In all honesty, the best thing is to go on their website and drop a enquiry to customer services

the more they sell the cheaper they get i would guess
