When my car is cold it is particularly tricky to get into any gear, no crunching or anything, just struggles to get into position. As soon as it’s done a mile or two it’s back to normal. I have assumed gear box oil is old and need replacing but if anyone can either confirm or suggest an alternative it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like contaminated clutch plate to me. Normally the rear seal on the engine weeping oil onto it. It makes the plate sticky & reluctant to release from the flywheel. On little used cars or cars left standing it can be rust on the flywheel which will disappear with regular use. A few clutch slipping take offs with lots of revs will cure that as well.

Thanks for that, I have suspected a leaking rear seal since I have had the car, unfortunately it has been difficult to identify... possible sump gasket leak, however if this is a symptom it certainly seems more likely to be the oil seal. I will give the slipping clutch a try and see how it goes. Maybe clutch will be next winters job!

I have the same on my 944, its a bit notchy when cold, but when it warms up it slips effortlessly into every gear, I just thought it was a quirk of the car ??

I don’t think it’s possible for a rear seal to leak onto the plate as there is a flywheel in the way, the RMS will leak on the back face of the flywheel and then get flicked off on to the inside of the bell housing
