I am beginning to seriously consider selling my 1989 Turbo and replacing it with a Cayman S, the reason being that I am simply not driving my turbo enough !
Before moving house last year I was probably covering around 4000 miles a year in it, since moving over 12 months ago I have only driven 500 miles in total ! It seems a shame that such a fantastic classic car should be sat on my driveway - unappreciated , not going anywhere and seen by no-one :( .
However I still would like to retain something for whizzing around at the weekend and the Cayman seems to tick all the boxes.

So the question is..... what should I do ? :)

28 year old car, 500 miles a year, rusting outside on the drive, buy the Cayman.

Sounds like you've fallen out of love with the 44 ? and fancy a change ?

Why would a Cayman or any other car you change top be driven more than 500 miles a year ?

What did the house move change not using the 44 ?

Apples and oranges. Classic and modern. Pointless to compare them. Do you want an apple or an orange? It is as simple as that.

No, I haven't fallen out of love  I just feel that the old girl simply isn't getting the attention she deserves. We recently moved to Dartmoor and I just don't think she likes it up here :)

Yes it is apples and oranges, and I like both :)

I went from an S2 to a Cayman S, so reasonably similar to you. The difference for me is that I sold my daily driver (Audi RS4) and the 944 to fund the Cayman, so it was always going to be my daily driver. I did spend a month with the 944 as my daily driver once and it no longer felt special.

The Cayman is a modern car, so it has no sense of occasion, just a very good car indeed.

If you're thinking of changing the 944 for another Porsche because you don't use the 944, what do feel will be different with a Cayman? You've said the 944 is a "fantastic classic car", so not sure what it is about the Cayman that would have the same appeal. Is it more that you want a Cayman to blast about in and can't have both that and the 944?

Oh, and do your research if you're seriously thinking of the Cayman. There are lots of well documented catastrophic engine failures, but nobody ever posts on a forum to say "guess what, my engine didn't blow up today", so put it into perspective.

My sig gives away that I also have an Audi TT. It took a year of trying to make a 2 seater sports car work with 2 kids, but I finally gave in - or rather my wife got fed up with always using her car and told me to buy "a car we can all get in" for 3k. Well, what did she expect? My point being that you can (just) get 2 kids in a 944, but impossible in a Cayman, but that may not be an issue for you.

Cheers,
Bryan

If it was a B7 RS4 Avant I'm not sure I'd have swapped that for a Cayman as a daily driver.

It sure was. Got to the 'been there, done that' stage, so moved on.

I was considering a B5 RS4 as a daily 3 or 4 years ago, but the bork potential put me off, so I bought a B7 2.0T quattro S-line instead, I still fancy a B7 RS4 though.

If you moan about the costs of keeping a 944 in 'factory' condition you don't want an RS4. The bills are simply in another league of silly. How much of another league?

-DRC dampers : £700 per corner if you catch them in time (they'll leak at this point) or £1.4k for a DRC unit on top if you ignore it.
You can fit coilovers but most people have said the ride gets too firm, an RS4 is a balance towards firm as stock to put things into perspective.
-Discs : Rears I believe are dealer only and around £350 each. Fronts can be had as ATE replacements but that's still £400ish for a pair.
-Tyres : £160 minimum a corner, and that's for something like a Falken at that money.
-Decoke ; if it's not been done they will need it at some point due to being direct injection. Again, £££.

I don't want to put you off but my friend has one. He kept quiet about the costs until I got my M3. The M3 is a pricier car than a 944 Turbo to own in so many ways, but again it looks to be on a par/slightly cheaper than an RS4!

Make no mistake, I love my M3, possibly more than the 944 but the 951 had a little more character and far less horror stories. And bills.

The 944 Turbo is recognised now as one of the greats. I would rather keep it and buy something more suited to daily driving than a Cayman.

The Cayman will be safer, quicker and all that electricky will flatter. The 944 will always be slower, less reliable and less safe. However, it does have loads of character and it’s price is going up, while the Cayman’s is going down.

My friend has got a B7 RS4 so I know all about the running/parts costs, inc the road tax. Touch wood, I've had no big unexpected bills from my 944T in the last 8 years. I've said before I'd have an M3 if I was only going to have one car, or needed 4 proper seats, and although there may not be much in it, a 944T just feels quicker to me.
