Hello from France. A friend, who is doctor, so knows nothing about cars other than how to drive them, has a 996 Millennium edition.

The car has chrome wheels and the chrome finish is peeling off all 4.

I am taking a lot of parts from my MG TC for re-chroming and would like to know if the chrome finish on the 996 wheels is real chrome and the chrome platers can re-chrome them.

Many thanks.

ps There does not seem to be wheel restorers here in France.

the factory finish can't be duplicated. He says it's a Mylar laminate over a resin base (the reddish undercoating).

I believe that some people have had them chromed.
Most you see for sale now have just silver alloys but good wheel refurbishing companies such as Lepsons Over here have chrome like finishes. Lepsons is called american Nickle chrome.

Jason,

OK, that's what I thought. Didn't know what it was but it doesn't look like chrome. I'm going to a chroming company tomorrow so I'll take one of the wheels with me and see if they can chrome them.

I cannoy find a wheel refurbishing company here in France so it's not a viable option. I have thouth about stripping it back to metal and spraying with chrome effect paint. However Camile, the owner, would like them chromed to be original.

Many thanks.

I'll post up the results and some pictures.

I'd go chrome powdercoat. Most durable and probably the best looking...

I got them polished. Look very good but they can only do the outside face so I painted the inner rims with chrome effect paint.

You can see them on http://www.frenchblat.com (MG TC and look at July/August)
450 Euro per wheel
