Hi guys,

i'm completely new to Porsche. I'm thinking of swapping my 535i BMW for a porsche my local place has been advertising.

The thing is that they have 3, two 996's and one 993. The first 996 is a 2001 and around £20,000. I love the look of it, pretty new looking and has a nice aero kit on.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=p

Love the fact it's only done 37,000 miles :)

The second car is a little more expensive 25k:

The 993, is a beauty but at 88,000+ miles, bbut at that price it's looking tempting.

Which would you reckon is the best for a family, daily runner car?

So what i was wondering is, is it worth getting a PPI done ?

The only local guys i know of are RPM and they're charging £70, which seems way more cheaper than Peter Morgans 300+vat. Has anyone used these guys before?

Not sure about how you guys felt when buying your first porsche, but i'm very nervous :?

Hi I am fairly new here (only 1 year in the Porker world), but the best advise I was given was from a 993 owner, who told me that you should never be put off by the high mileage of a used Porsche, in most cases the higher the better, as all of the normal issues would have, more than likely been resolved.

It was also pointed out that as I would also be using it for a daily commute, that the 996 would be a better and safer bet for me than the 993 - but that may not be true in your case, but he felt it would be for me. And above all else look for service history, service history, service history. Do as much work as you can to check on the car, but all the best & I am sure that you will not regret it. I know I have not.

Drive them all, the one that puts the biggest smile on your face is the one for you. :)

Mileage shouldn't be an issue as long as it has been properly looked after. The 996 will feel a lot more modern but the sound of the air cooled 993 will stir your emotions.

Have fun and let us know which you pick and don't forget we like to see pictures.

Totally different beasts... I have just taken a deposit on a 993 and searching for 996TT.

Mainly because I want a daily driver car and the 993 every day is a little agricultural. I know I wont get the emotional side, but I will get something bloody quick every day.

However if not a big commute, lowish mileage then the 993 is charged with emotion and talks to you.

One word of caution that 993 looks very very cheap so I would have a long hard look at that and maybe stretch the budget a bit and get the best 993 out there, if thats what you want.

£24k will get an excellent 993 or 996 (not C4s though). You must drive both and decide what you want out of it.

Has everyone else missed the CAT C bit in the 993 ad?
That's probably why it looks cheap.

I got a call from the sales guy yesterday after work telling me he had taken deposit on the silver 996 and the 993 :/ I was going to go for the silver 996. Though he did say he has another 2003 (facelift) 996 which has done 50,000 miles for £26k. Which I thought was a bit pricey, since the 01 silver 996 already sold was 20k. The best bit was he had just got in a black C4 :D

After seeing the 993 was a cat C, I was going to test drive and see how it drove, but probably not have bought it.

The test drive:

When I got there it was sitting outside, as with all black cars, it looked dirtier than it actually was. What a beauty, the lines, the kit, I ended up just looking at it for a while. After the nicities with the sales guy, grabbed the keys and sat in the C4. Before I could admire how comfy the seats were, I noticed the tip gearbox, and in my head I thought sh!t. All of the cars I've owed have been automatics/bmw steptronic, which are lovely. Though I'm to lazy to be bothered, even when I'm going fast, i switch it to sports mode and I'm off. Though reading peoples comments here I had my head set on driving the manual, I'd miss the auto but heck it's a sports car, damn it, it should be a manual ;) Oh well I was already in the car so I thought lets see if it's as bad as what everyone says it is. Started up the car, which was my first disappointment, no growl, no roar, no anything, which doesn't sound like a porsche. My first experience of a porsche was my friends 1984 911, that thing could purr! Oh the noise on that would leave you standing there wanting to hear more. Anyway, it was so queit my V8 535 was louder. As we were sitting on a cobbled side road facing down on a hill, I put it into drive and off we went. All I can say is I'm glad it didn't rip the spine out of my body. So the ride wasn't as good as I thought, but that's not the cars fault, it's a sports car and it demands nice lovely roads. Which was my second disappointment, as mentioned not any fault of the car, but the fault of the crappy roads in blighty. I don't think I could pop my family in that and drive through Glasgow, without shattering some spines.

At that time of the day 5.30pm, all the office drones were getting off home so I was stuck in traffic most of the test drive. I rolled down the window, so I could hear the engine, sigh nothing. As we trundled along I noticed how many people wanted to run me off the road , first I thought meh it's a coincedence the articulated truck almost took the back out. Then there was a taxi driver who almost took the front out, just because he didn't want to give me way. Then there was that other guy … nevermind, I take it porsche owners have to deal with this crap?

I did get a chance to play with the tip, it's a bit weird since you have what looks like volume controls on your steering wheel.

After the test drive I caught myself admiring the car from the outside again, what a beauty! Black, C4 :D I checked the usual service history, if I recollect there are two previous owners, it's a 2003 pre facelift and he wants 26,000. It's over my budget for a daily runner/family taxi, but for the right car I might stretch. The service history wasn't as good as I thought it could have been, only 4 stamps, two OPC and to specialists, with the next one a minor due soon. The owner of the car an older chap has kept it immaculate, clean as a whislte. So I guess the service history though sparing wouldn't be that bad.

In short:

positives

C4
Black

Negatives

Out of my budget
C4 so more expensive
Service history is wanting (minor service after I've bought it)

Does it sound like I'm trying to convince myself? What do you guys think?

Do you reckon that the C4 selling at 26k is a little low?

There is a narrow body C4 which should be mid low 20's and the wider Turbo Body C4S

This does look a whole lot better in my view but prices are high for those.

Narrow C4 - thats looks pricey. Trawl Pistonheads and see what you can get for the money. There will be tons to choose from and better prices in my view.

Dont get sucked in by the first one... !!

Am I missing something here? whats the big deal about a C4, why? overpriced and boring, why would you need a 4wheel drive 911 with a standard engine ? maybe on a turbo, but only maybe, this is supposed to be a sports car after all.

It was the only one he had at the time, so I thought what the heck ill drive it. It looked the part :) its a C4S i take it that's not a turbo version.

I'll be taking the c2 for a spin tomorrow, and post on how that goes.

Thanks for the comments guys really appreciate it, it makes the whole purchasing a Porsche a little easier. :D

:D I just got back from driving the C2. What a car! He let me drive the car alone, as he was alone at the showroom. Wow!! I had a smile on my face all the time. I use to think you can't top a good sports configured BMW. Boy was i wrong.

Unfortunately the car had a few issues, so i said no. However the sales guy said he'll fix all the issues and see if he work out a deal. So i'll keep looking around and see what he comes back with. It would need to be lower than £25,000 to be attractive.

There was one thing about the car, in that when idling the rev would move up and down. And not really settle, which i think is a problem with the car. Again something he's going to get sorted.

This was by first go at a manual Porsche C2, so much fun! I'm still smiling hahahaa :albino:
