Post subject:  Can anyone help with a service history check?

Hi,

I am picking up a 996 cabriolet on Saturday and have heard that it's wise to change the IMS if there is no indication that is has already been done. Can anyone help with obtaining the SH (or suggesting how I go about getting it) so I can get ahead of the game please?

The car is a 911 Carrera Cab reg. X146 KTG and the VIN is: WP0ZZZ991S641791.

It has 43k miles on it.

My previous cars have all been 924s and 944s and while I still have my 994 Turbo Cab, the 996 attracted me as its tiptronic, yep getting old :-)

Thanks

Gordon

Ask your local Porsche dealer, place to start

Thanks for the reply Waylander, I'll give that a try.

I kinda hope someone might recognise the reg on here as well and have some info.

If you look in the service book and contact the agents that did the work. They may have the invoices on file to give you.

Thanks Sean,
I don't get the car till Saturday coming and was just trying to do a quick check prior to collecting it.

I didn't know it was as simple as contacting the local Porsche Centre as waylander suggested, so I'm going to do that today (as soon as all the meetings finish!)
Regards,
Gordon

Personally I wouldn't waste my time, until I have the service book.

I Phoned the local Porsche Centre but that didn't really help much, they checked the national system and only found one record for Porsche Guildford.

I phoned Porsche Guildford and they had 3 records (not sure why the Edinburgh Centre couldn't picked that up on the national system) but even they said they could only provide info from Centres in their area (?).

I wanted to see if 'X146 KTG' had any history of the IMS replacement being done and Guildford had no record of that unfortunately.

so yep good idea Sean look at the service manual, just a shame the car's 350 miles away.

I'll get a read of that on Saturday when I hope to bring it home and park it beside my turbo cab :-)

Patience young man :D

Good luck with the new car, youll love it

Porsche Centres are run by different companies, so im suprised there were any records of work at other centres at all.
Once out of warranty, its more likely to have been looked after by a specialist, lots in that area.

The IMS bearing is often replaced as a precuation when a clutch is replaced, that obviously wont be a factor on a tip.
I would very much doubt it has been replaced unless it has failed. Failure rate isnt anywhere near as high as some scaremongers may have you think.

Hi Jason,
Thanks for your informative post.

Yes that's the one, well spotted :-)

I'll get a good look at it tomorrow and wandering back up the A1 with my son in the afternoon...so he can go look at a Street Triple somewhere round the Tyne-and Wear area.

I take your point regarding the low figures for IMS failure but it would have been nice to know if it has been done (or not), as you say it's not so likely in a tip.

Waylander pointed out that it was just a case of phoning a local OPC and asking, so I did that. Initially they will tell you about work that they have done on the car but they can also look up a Porsche national system which includes work from other centres. Of interest not only for work done but also for the mileage that they recorded at the time.

Gordon

Well I was impressed with the car at first sight but was tripping over myself to pay the money asked and be gone...on account of that engine note!

While I love the turbo power surge of my 944, the sound and delivery from the 996 is intoxicating. It took us many hours to get home from High Wycombe but once we reached Carlisle we just had to sample the car on the A roads home :-)

Today's the first day of Spring, the sun's up and I'm just about to sample some roof down motoring in my new baby.

Thanks again for the advice given earlier.
