Whilst driving to the Gym the other evening [stereo off] I noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine about a mile down the road. Because it was a cold start I wasn't putting the revs above 2000 anyways, but was especially cautious once I heard the noise. I parked up at the Gym and recorded the noise with my phone..

I started the car to drive home and recorded the engine before I set off; the ticking was reduced in volume [by half] but was still there nonetheless..

Any ideas/help as to the cause before I go to my OPC..?

997 Gen 2 Carrera S PDK+

If you are worried about the noise, and your OPC is close by, take it back so he can look at it. make sure you have all your ducks in a row though, listen for the noise whilst driving, while parked, how many revs on engine, engine temp, transmission engaged/not. If the car is fully covered get it in to them, but it is important to give them as much info as you can to assist in finding any fault. Sure it will be fine :D

Bore scoring, so ive been told...
Is the ticking coming from the bottom right of engine bay..
Porsche never really fixed the problem with the 997, not even gen 2's are safe.
Speak to hartech about it...They will know far more than Opc... Opc just change the liners they don't fix the problem.
I was looking at buying a 997 Gen 2 till I found out what was causing the ticking noise.
Spoke to a Porsche engine builder and their newest car with bore scoring problem
was a 12 plate with 22k on clock.. some cars just get it..

Speak to the right people do your research, I did.....

All the best chris

Nothing so dramatic fortunately.. Turned out to be the Fuel Tank Vapour pump on its way out..

I called the AA to have the car looked at before I could have it flatbedded to OPC Guildford by them. I will admit to being slightly sceptical as to whether the AA Dude would know what the problem was, but to my embarassment and surprise he identified the issue. The ticking wasn't present when we first fired up the car, but then came on after a few minutes once the engine had dropped to idle at approx. 850RPM. We chatted about the engine etc. for a while, and he wrote me up a report with his assessment and suggested action ["replace fuel vapour pump"] which is good for records etc. I then drove the car that evening and had no noise from the pump / engine

I spoke with Rob at JZM [where I bought the car], both before and after the inspection and he said he had never had a 997.2 in with any engine problems as serious [and endemic] as the bore scoring / IMS issues commonly associated with the 996 & 997.1 M96/M97 engines. It's the main reason I stretched my budget to get a 997.2, along with build / interior quality improvements..
