I have a 996 C2 and I run the tyre pressure as set out in the manual. I was wondering how every one manages the tyre pressures on a track day?

hot temps (i.e. as you come off track) should be set as per cold temps on the sticker attached to the car in the first instance.

That's assuming you are running road tyres ?

The way to do it is this.....

Say your road tyre pressures are set at ...say 36psi as an example......

Go for a COUPLE or maybe 3 hot laps and when you get back to the pits check your pressures.......you will find they have gone UP by around 4 psi....which you then let out to go back to 36...

Then another couple of hot laps and measure again...you will probably find they have gone up by around 2 to 3 psi....which you let out again....

Eventually after several times you will find that the pressures stabilise at 36 psi.....which is how you leave them for the rest of the day....

2 IMPORTANT POINTS....

1, After the days racing DO NOT forget to use a compressor (or nearest garage compressor) AFTER the tyres have cooled to put the pressures BACK UP.....

2. Use an ACCURATE gauge....and I dont mean a 70p Halfords special....mine is a Snap-On one that cost around £30....which I use all the time even in garages as its MUCH more accurate than garage ones that have been kicked around...

then as Brett says, start of with these pressures; then each time you come in off track immediately check your pressure and reduce down to the original sticker pressures, bit by bit. Kepp checking throughout the day, but most of the change wil take place in the first couple of sessions. Dont forget to re-check after lunch if they have had time to cool right down & be careful on your out laps
Doing this will also give you a good idea of how you are using the car, i.e. using the front or rear tyres more.

and dont forget to add air when you're ready to go home.i'd also stop after 20 mins or so at a garage and re-check ideally.

Thanks I think I will look out fot a good tyre pressure gauge, I have a mini compressor.

That's exactly what I do.

I think the standard is 36F, 44R and you will find that starting 4psi lower from cold does the job as Brett said.

However, I have found that generally those quoted pressures are a little high but this is personal preference for experimentation.

Thanks for all the info. I did one session and the pressures rose by 4psi all round so lowered them to F36 R44. I then did a second session and they rose by 4psi all round again lowered them back down to 36-44. They then stayed at these pressures for the rest of the day.

Had a cuppa before I left and checked pressurses and they dropped 4psi, inflated to road pressure, checked the next day and had dropped by 4psi.

the garage i bought mine from, set them at 28F and 32B, so not much letting out on my first track day they said that these where what they favour, as it gets the best out of the car while being driven.

hmm I'd be careful at those pressures

Porsche do tend to know a thing or two about their cars.
I'd go with book pressures initially for road driving, then tweak in small increments to personal taste

For normal road driving (I don't do trackdays) I am about 4psi below the manufacturer but as David says I changed in increments to suit my taste. This gives 32F and 40R in my case.

The 32R figure seems incredibly low for road use (12psi below recommended) given all the weight is above the rear wheels and I'd worry the rim could touch the ground under higher speed cornering if the tyre wasn't hot enough.

Willing to be proved wrong though!

next time i get it out, going to put what it says and take it from there.
