Hi all,

Could anybody tell me more about the 2 distributors on a 1991 964.
Does the 964 have electronic iggnition. why 2 dizzies??
Is it possible to run the 964 on coil packs and do away with the rotor arm/cap.
How tunable is the ecu ( is it the k jetronic). Can it be mapped.

Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Frank

The 964 twin distributors were fitted to accommodate the twin spark plugs per cylinder. Twin plugs, twin distributors, twin lead sets, twin coils and twin ignitor modules.

The ignition system is known as 'Digital Motor Electronics', DME or Motronic. Or the Bosch KE-Motronic, I think.

The ignition system is not electronic in itself but is electronically controlled by the ignition map which is stored in the ECM.

I'm fairly sure the ignition system can be converted to fully electronic with coil packs etc and the ignition timing can be remapped, but you'd need to talk with a specialist in this area to determine what's available and exactly what your requirements of the car are, and hence what benefits can be expected from the conversion.

Thank you for the reply.
I am going to have to get some more info on the engine.
Cheers,
Frank.

Yes, ite re-mapable.
Yes its electronic ignition.
Can you do away with the twin rotor dizzy set up?
I think so but its not worth the money or the effort.
Look at any race prepped 964 they all run a programable ecu, with twin dizzys.
