So I bought my 964 C4 coupe in October 2012 with 136k on the clock. The owner advertised the car but no one went to see it due to the lack of "specialist history" from 2004 to 2012. He had listed services done in this time and kept the receipts for works done separately but obviously there were no stamps in the book. Normal reaction from interested buyers was to run a mile but after checking the car over it and putting it against others I had seen with a so called "full history". I bought it knowing work was required to get it to a good standard but all of my previous cars have been low mileage, garage queens and this was a bit of a fun project.

I don't suggest this is the best way to buy any air cooled but I'm lucky enough to know a reasonable amount about them and met a very honest older guy who loved his car.

When I bought it:

Looks ok but it was on Cup 2's and stood like a 4x4  I like the standard look and thought about a number of changes but for now it will stay in standard guise (almost). Work done so far:

Full service including valve clearance, full suspension refresh (Billy's & H/R springs), all suspension bushes, drop links etc, set to RS ride hight, engine and g/box mounts replaced, full geo alignment, set of Cup 1 's and tyres, cup pipe fitted, numerous oil pipes and seals/gaskets changed, full brake overhaul etc the list of small items seemed endless but all part of the fun.

Enjoyed for a while then set about a full paint and body refurb which is where I am now stripping the car down and sorting the obvious and hidden rusty bits.... Pics if you want them... :D

Looks good to me
I guess sometimes you've got to weigh up the evidence and go with your instinct.
As you said some with 'history' weren't always the car to buy
Nice one

Thanks guys, yes it is much better the whole driving experience has changed quite dramatically for the better and so it should after the work done so far. If you were to look at the car appearance wise it looks fine with the odd area/bubble needing attention and of course pictures never lie
It's not until you start stripping them down that the true story comes to light. I consider mine to have nothing rust wise that's horrific. It does require one or two areas to be cut out and sorted but that's nothing unusual. A number of guys on 911uk/Rennlist are way ahead of me in the process, great guys with detailed stories.

The bad bits:

One of the jacking points is shot so will need to weld in a replacement the rest is very solid so overall very pleased. One sizeable cost when doing this is trim/rubber costs along with numerous other bits you end up replacing depending on your level of OCD.. I've tried non - Porsche trims in the past the majority you have to "make fit" and IMO just don't look right in the end. I stripped all of the glass and trims out to save some cost along the way which helps. That's all for now :D
