Hi All,

Quick question , Doing Oil change for first time at the week-end. Bought all the parts need some advise on what's the easy way to do it.

Do I need to take off the rear under-shields to get at the Sump plug? What is the quantity of new oil I need to put in, some say 9Litres some say 10-12litres?

Look forward to some expert advise..

When I had my 964 I always took the under guard off to change the oil, that way you get a good look at what's going on underneath and it's easier to get at the sump plug.

Reference the oil quantity, and from memory, it's around 9lts but that goes up to 11lts if you drain down the oil thermostat and remote sump, which not everyone does. I only did mine the first time because there's no way of telling how long the oil had been in the engine. After that I used to change the sump oil only and filter every year before the season after doing roughly 2000 miles.

It's a straight forward task just make sure the rear end is supported safely before you start.

Enjoy it.

When I change my oil I get the car hot until the oil cooler fan kicks in
Raise the rear of the car slightly and on the r/h side , place my 20L big oil drain tray under the oil tank situated under the r/h rear arch in front of the rear wheel and with my asbestos fingers carefully undo the drain plug at the bottom of the tank
The oil is boiling hot so care has to be taken even if you have to let the drain plug drop into the removed oil as you can retrieve it later I then just leave it to drain for a while It drains rapidly so make sure the container will catch it all
when drained I then remove the oil filter with an absorbent rag at hand
There is also a drain plug on the lower crank case but every time I have tried to drain from here after emptying the main tank only a thimble full has come out so haven't bothered draining from there the last few times So no undertray removal required
(ps I run without the tray)
When re filling make sure that the sump plugs are back in
Level the car
I pour 2 off 4 litre oil cans into the filler and fire up and get the car warm
With the car on idle check the gauge on the dashboard and add oil until it registers about 3/4 , confirm on dipstick but difficult to read with clean fresh oil, the gauge will bob up and down when filling
Don't worry if the gauge doesn't register after initially adding about 8 litres its safe
The massive oil capacity is also for cooling reasons

Thanks for all the responses. Useful info. Completed Oil and filter change at the week-end. Didn't need to take the Rear Guard off as there's an access hole in it to get at the sump plug, and yes the drain plug is hot... I did take the guard off after I'd refilled because there was oil dripping from it, this was some of the old oil that had run down during the draining off and trapped on the top. Took it off completely and cleaned it with degreaser and jet washed it..Topped up with around 8 Litres of new Oil and ran it for about half and hour then added another litre. gauge up to 4 so she was OK. Dip stick a bit hit and miss really as clean oil doesn't show that well.. All ready for winter...and the occasional sunny week-end morning run.. :D
