Hi all,
I'm going to put new pads and discs on the rear of my 964, but apparently Dampening Discs, which come in 28mm and 30mm sizes are required.

Any idea what these do, and why there are different sizes? Thanks in advance,

Steve

Hi Steve

I know sod all about 911s, but the brake dampers are a generic Porsche thing.

They are adhesive pads which stick to backing plate of pad, and fit into caliper piston. They help the pad move back smoothly with piston, so reduce risk of any brake squeal. Different sizes depending on the different piston sizes in your particular caliper.

I have them on my 928 at the moment but they are frankly a bit of a pain when doing other jobs involving pad removal/caliper removal, and of course just replacing pads is difficult without unbolting caliper from hub. It's almost as effective just putting a thin layer of copper anti-squeal grease on back of pad instead and much less fiddly.

Will probably use the copper grease instead next time I service breaks. Easy enough to add the dampers if there is any brake noise.

Hi Adrian,

Somehow your reply went under the radar... Thanks a lot for the info- i'm having the pads and discs replaced next weekend, so i'll bear the copper grease in mind!

Cheers,

Steve

My pleasure Steve.

If the car is new to you the important thing is to check condition of the side plates in the callipers. They must allow pads to move freely. Over time corrosion builds up behind plates and distorts them. Fix is to remove plates, clean up corrosion and ideally fit new plates
