Hi all,
I'm looking at buying a 1990 964, and have just had it inspected (111 point check) at an official Porsche centre.
They said it was generally in a good condition, but needed a few things doing. Any advice on the following would be very much appreciated- thanks!

- Gear selector shaft leaking

- Discs and rear pads required

- Oil leaking from the "through bolt seals", "chest gaskets" and "timing covers". - Does this need to be attended to imminently, and is this what's referred to as a 'top' or 'bottom' end rebuild?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Steve :hello2: hi and welcome.

Sorry I can't advise much on the issues, but I've always found OPC very competitive on repair prices. If they give you a quote, you can use it as a bargaining tool when you buy it?

Hi Lee, thanks very much!
The OPC prices were horrendous- £800 just for rear discs/pads, £550 odd for the gaitors, and £7200 for the engine work. (and that's without tyres, oil and filter etc!)

Hartech in Bolton would be well worth contacting, not far from Southport and well recommended by most on here.
I used them twice on my 944 Cab and they do have a very good buyers guide on their web site :-

They also offer a lifetime maintenance plan (a good place to buy a car from I would have thought)

Yes, but that's Porsche prices. They even quoted £270 odd just for a battery! You can pick suitable Bosch ones up for £68!

I've looked at a few, although i originally wanted a 3.2 Carrera, but there's something a little 'special' about this one, hence considering the different model. If price negotiations are favourable, then i'll buy it and get the work done to it. At the end of the day, there's little to stop spending top money on one, only to have the engine go a week or two later. At least if i get the jobs done, i know they've been done properly. Well that's the theory, anyway!

I would think you can half the OPC price for the work. What labour rate were they quoting you?

Oil leaks are common on the 964, is there oil on the floor under the car?

There are a lot of cars out there that will have had this work done, so it does give you the option to be aggressive in the negotiations.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

In addition to Hartech you could try:

Sports & Classic, Knutsford - 01565 621311 http://www.sportsandclassic.com - I've not used them personally but they have a good reputation.

I use Loe Bank Motors in Edenfield, the owner Chris Sanderson is a knowledgeable chap and looks after my 993 and a few others around the North West use him. 01706 826060 http://www.loebankmotors.co.uk

Alternatively pop along to the North West region monthly meet, there is one next Monday (2nd September) I'm sure someone can give you some advice, you don't need to have a Porsche yet! See the North West pages for the location etc. http://tipec.net/region_northwest.php

Hi Sean,

Yes, there's about a cap full underneath that's dropped over the weekend. (I'll try to load a pic that Porsche took for me)
