964 to Keep or Not to Keep - Trading in for a 996 Turbo

Post subject:  964 to Keep or Not to Keep - Trading in for a 996 Turbo
So I am in the lucky position to be able to add some money onto my 964 and have been thinking about a 996 turbo. Have also considered an early 997 or even a top end 996 C4S. With all of these bar the turbo maybe they are set to loose a few more grand over the next few years right? My 964 has gone up in value since I bought it, admittedly I have spent a fair amount so its probably level investment at the moment. I love the 964 but have been wanting to use it more and more, its on 162k miles already :)
Its not that useable these days, the KW's are a little bouncy as a daily, heaters a little weak, and i get a bit worried parking it everywhere as its got that sort of classic car custodian thing hanging over my head....
it looks like this, except ive since spent another fortune at Jaz, renewing more pipes, and at the great bodyshop across the road to them on Cup mirrors painted and fitted and RS air scoops it looks proper bad ass now and i could stare at it for hours on end bathing in its lines..... oooo there i go again, fair to say i like it alot....

I imagine its worth what £12k ish maybe to the right person that will enjoy a tiptronic as much as I do, and a turbo can be had for around £20k???? thoughts please

I suggest you test drive your chosen cars, as when i changed from my 944S to a 911SSE i considered a modern car, 996 4S, 996TT (the 997 was out of my pricerange at the time) and a Cayman S as they give a lot of bang for the buck, but thought that it would become more of an everyday car than a weekend treat and the Cheshire cat grin may be lost, so i went air-cooled and get that grin everytime i drive it, just my twopenneth :wink:

It's a hard one this, your 964 looks great but sadly your valuation of it is about right.

997/996TT or C4S are all cracking cars and great value. They are dull though by comparison and will not put the same smile on your face.

I would keep the 964 and buy her a sister :)

the 964 came to me very keenly priced lets say, so i can let it go for c£10k ish if i had too which is a crazy bargain for this car having spent a fortune this past year on wheel, kw suspension mirrors and about £1k at JAZ, i reckons ive spent £4k this year alone hahaha hey ho. will go and look at a few modern cars and decide me thinks.

I think the dilemma you have is very valid, the aircooled cars are not the best cars as daily drivers now, given what you say about parking, values etc. coupled with the grin factor, the true 'sportscar' feel, which from my experience is not so strong on all the cars you mention, except the turbo's. Try them all out,and have another think, why not keep the '64 for the weekend and get a mile muncher, or save up and buy a 993 turbo!! :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

All personal preference. No one is right or wrong in this debate, and there are two ways to look at it. Better the devil you know or change to a 996 turbo and enjoy the new boost. I'm a change it type of person, but now I have the turbo I feel settled.

I do think there could be few big bills coming in a £20k turbo though?

Your 964 looks wonderful. You will loose £5k in depreciation if you buy any of the other cars on your list as soon as you drive off the forecourt, let alone what you might spend on service and repairs. You know what I would do!

so i have mile muncher now 58 reg fully loaded 535d estate, the e61 m5 rare as it was was really p'ing me off, but try and use the 964 a few times a week without fail, im just wondering if i had something a little more usable it would be pretty much a daily car, i nearly bought a brand new 5 series gt this week now that would have been a shite idea. i work about 20 mins from 911virgin and am going to look at a high mileage turbo this week, hear what you say about the big bills though on a 20k car, so could stretch to 25 if needs be, just been outside polishing the 64 :) bad ass right???? check out the black 996 turbo at 911virgin though...... yum yum

911 Virgin is a good way to go, Henry is a TIPEC member and sounds like a nice guy. At least get a test drive and see what you think of the car. :D

No harm in a test drive, just don't get smitten as the 996TT can be addictive when you feel the boost, also you will find the TT a much easier drive than the '64

I would vouch for Henry at 911 Virgin as well.

We did a couple of warranty jobs for him the other year, no quibble and no problems.

I have also seen a couple of customers buy cars from him and have been looked after very well, even beyond the call of duty.

Only gripe I have ever heard, is that he can be grumpy about test drives if he gets any idea you are not serious, which is understandable, as I bet he gets plenty of tire kickers.

I think the 996 turbo may have a little depreciation to happen yet, and 964 will be appreciating in the near future, but I doubt the 964 will appreciate in value to the point of it being worth more than the turbo, although the two values might get close, but being a turbo, in the long run its prices will start to rise again eventually.

Hi there.

The 996 turbo is a hell of a car. The 964 is also a very good car and well regarded particularly amongst those who race cars and understand handling.

Funnily enough I drove Sharon's 996 turbo back from the boat last night on my own and without luggage. I had a really good time. I hadn't driven it for ages and we have just had a 4 wheel alignment done so wanted to give is a whirl. Less harsh than a GT3 but more forgiving in that a quick dab on the throttle re-establishes any lost speed in the blink of an eye.

It still settles down nicely if you want to push on through corners and it feels less remote than a 993 turbo.

We don't have any problems with offering test drives, obviously we assume people are genuine. The fact we work on an appointment basis helps, we get relatively few "time wasters". Most people we see are serious about buying at some stage. A good engine, though not without issues, be particularly careful of recently over -revved engines. You can have timing chain issues within 100 hours or so.

Not wanting to influence your already difficult choice, but just had to say that your 964 is one of the best looking I've seen and looks stunning in that colour combination :D

so i waved goodbye to my long suffering 964 this evening very sad indeed......

tonight i am collecting my 53 reg manual 996tt in basalt with natural brown leather, so that will keep me happy, DNS stage 2 with fabspeed system..... yikes.
