Hi all,

As those who have seen my thread here will know, I bought an '85 944 in December of last year from Porsche Mode, Bristol. I have been in touch with them since, but once I provided picture evidence that the work hadn't been completed they stopped replying, so here I am.

The car had been in storage for a long time - supposedly 15 years. Marco from Porsche Mode gave a long list of restorations works carried out. He also supplied it with a new MOT, only advisory being rear tyres, since replaced.

Upon buying the car he provided a receipt (here) for the work carried out. Guess I should have taken the disorganised receipt as a hint...

The longer I have the car, the more work I realise he hasn't actually done. Most obvious of which is rear wheel bearings - First I found that the hubnuts were loose (could tighten with a standard 1/2" ratchet drive). Once the hubs were apart the outer seal and bearing had been replaced, were shiney new and clean grease, but once I knocked the stub axle back it was apparent that the rear bearings hadn't been replaced, the seals were non existent and the hub was full of very dirty, very old oil. (He would also have had to open up the CV joint to do the bearings - all CV's were dry). That's one side, I've yet to tackle the other but both rear wheels had play.

First job I did upon getting the car home was front disc brakes which were very lipped (something the MOT apparently missed). This involved opening up the front hubs. Grease was black and bearings showed slight signs of wear - At the time I wasn't sure if they'd been replaced or not (Do you get black grease?) but having seen the grease he used on the rears, I'm going to go with nope.

The bushings were more worn than I first realised - after a bit of driving an outer front ARB bush had pushed itself most of the way out of it's mounting, and was so obviously corroded that not even my local 'pass anything' MOT garage would have let them through without comment!

Also, it appears the car passed it's MOT with no horn.

My first attempt at writing this got a bit ranty! Hopefully that was more to the point :p I realise none of these issues are massive, and nothing I can't fix without too much difficulty, but I have a receipt from a garage marketing themselves as 'Bristol's Leading Porsche Specialist' stating that the work has been done! I expect it to have been done, especially as it raised the value car when I bought it. It also leaves me with the need to go through all the other work listed on the receipt and check it, belts first and foremost, which is a worry I could do without.

Marco knows who I am, but in line with forum rules my name's Rowan, I purchased a Black '85 944 from Porche Mode early December 2015.

Some pictures to enjoy:

Bushes, fresh from an MOT:

Front wheel bearings - not exactly new:

Not what you want to see when you push the stub axle out:

Still a very pretty car which I'm enjoying owning (mostly)

Very disappointing to read, let us know if they make good on the issues.

Posting a scan of the invoice would be helpful.

I'll keep you up to date. I initially emailed when I found the loose hub nuts and the response was very quick and dismissively apologetic. I gave him 3 days to respond to my last email before posting this... we shall see!

The link "(here)" after I mention the receipt is a link to the receipt :)

Hi :)

Several of those things should NEVER have passed an MOT..

I would be ringing the MOT centre and asking them which they would prefer...THEY have a word with the garage about putting it all right at the garages cost....

Or you ringing VOSA (in charge of MOT STATIONS ) who take a VERY dim view of MOT`s like yours (done for a mate ..local garage etc)

They WILL put pressure on the garage....

All the best Brett :)
