Some of you may have seen CJ Autos at the big shows - they are regulars at Race Retro, NEC Classics and the recent Restoration event at the NEC.

They do all sorts of lifts and gear for lifting and moving vehicles in the garage. Over 3 years ago I bought a pair of their adjustable ramps - once you drive on to them you can get wheels up to a really good height by turning the jacking thread by hand with ratchet or much faster using an impact driver.

Recently the thread jammed on one of the ramps. I contacted CJ Autos to ask their advice, and to see if it was possible to buy a single replacement ramp. Colin Simpson at CJ exchanged several emails with me to check which thread was fitted to my ramp (he knew they had changed from a conventional thread to an acme thread about the time I'd bought my ramps), as he wanted to just send me replacement thread (it's a couple of feet long!) and the threaded block it goes into. In the end he asked me to cut off a chunk of the thread and post it to him. Within a few days he got in touch to say that since making my ramps they had changed the design slightly, so they had had to manufacture a one-off block and threaded rod for me as the parts on the current design would not be suitable. They also included the big nut drilled to take a locking pin. Wanted to charge me £20 + a few quid postage (the items are heavy!).

I hacksawed off the seized original thread this evening and unbolted the block with jammed thread. Installed new thread and block and the ramp now works great again - really silky smooth action to raise it.

This is great service from a company who stand by their products. It also shows advantage of dealing with a small company who understand their products and who make sure you get sent the right items. Also the guy who picks up the phone may well be - as in my case - the guy who designed the item in the first place! Their bread and butter is bigger hydraulic lifts so I was at the modest end of their product range, but they went to great efforts to sort my problem in the most inexpensive way.

Photos show the ramp (with replacement block and threaded rod) and the seized rod and threaded block so you can see what I'm talking about!
