might be worth changing waterpump while the belts are off, its a sort of unwritten rule to replace pump every 2nd set of belts

I've seen that written several times on the forum. I have mentioned it to the OPC and they are going to keep me informed as work goes on. :|
They've asked to keep the car overnight and I'm saving a contingency fund

A theory I've read somewhere by someone who knows more than me is swap the pump every other belt change, e.g. around 80K.

Swopping the pump every other belt change seems to be the norm.

You know in the back of your mind if you don't change the pump, sods law says it will fail.

Yup especially with the extra tension of the new belts!

I often think this idea of not knowing how much the bill will be at the end is so open to abuse... I try to do most of the work myself at home but when I need to I'll try to pin the mechanic down to a particular cost or at least ball park as much as possible.

I'm sure most will only charge you for what they actually did, fair and honestly, but gotta budget for these things too, maybe leave the more expensive jobs that can be left until when they're more affordable.

It's easy for the bill to run away, I've had many a call from people who have sent a car in for brakes, belts, pump and service to finish up with a bill for £1500+.

Scary thing is that's what that lot will cost you at a good Indie. A real wake up call when you've just bought a 2.5K car.
