Hi all, neither praise nor grumble this as I haven't used Cath Burrows Independent Porsche Specialists. This post is to find out your experiences of this independent, if anyone has taken their car there, and it seems the most appropriate section of the forum to enquire. I've not long had my car and this independent is literally 2 miles up the road so it would be ideal if they are worth going to. Any experiences? Thanks in advance...

Hi Sean, yes i'm aware of Hartech and they have a great reputation. Just wondered about this other one as it's so close to home. Will wait and see if anyone is able to offer any feedback, failing that it'll be off to Hartech if it needs anything doing. Cheers, Elliot

I met her at her workshop, she was a pleasant enough person. I stumbled across her because I was looking for Douglas Valley Breakers (another place just two miles from you but worth avoiding) and she is in an industrial estate opposite them. She had a few Porsches she was working on, and had her own yellow 968 sport parked outside. She must have known what she was doing or else nobody would have let her work on their cars.

You'll just have to call round and make your own opinion..... but do let us know.

Hi John, thanks for the feedback. She's also endorsed by reputable local car dealer who uses her for any work that is required on the Porsche's that he offers for sale so my confidence is building. I have a friend who used to work at Douglas Valley Breakers and he's told me some stories that made my toes curl so I'll not be dropping in there to part with any cash anytime soon. Thanks, Elliot

Cath is great, very thorough and straight talking. Sorted the handling on my 993 which another local indie had completely missed i.e. rear suspension bush completely fubar. She is stowed out with work, specialises in boxters and 996s but has loads of knowledge on 944s and 993/964.
She is also a crazy biker, got to be good.

Hi there efac2,

Just reading posts Re: Cath Burrows. I'm new to porsche ownership and am too from the Regal county of Wigan. Where did you get your car serviced in the end, I'm not feeling the love for the quotes from Porsche, but my recent purchase has previously been serviced by Mercedez and I wanted to take it to someone who specialises in Porsches.

Any opinions would be appreciated

Phil

Hi Phil,

Sincere apologies for not seeing your post until now... over 4 months late!

My experience of Cath Burrows, whom I have now used the services of - and never will again, has been mixed.

I am a very keen cyclist so the fact that she knocked Bradley Wiggins off his bike didn't do her any favours in my book... that aside, and the fact that she worked on my car prior to this incident, I can report the following:

She is as mad as a box of frogs. She's plain and straight talking. She's like marmite... you know the rest.

I took my car in for ballast resistors and fitting of a catalyst. I was relieved of a sizeable number of sheckles (definitely less than OPC) and sometime later realised that I had a new dent in one of my sills. I'm not one for confrontation these days so decided against going down to confront her to be told wasn't done by me, to have the superseded argument and to return no better off but more stressed, but I know for a fact that this damage occured in her workshop. In fact when I took the car to the bodyshop to have the dent filled the repairer said 'do you not recognise the shape of the dent? it's identical to the circular top of a trolley jack!'

Anyway, having been self-employed previously I'm in no way slagging off an independant as I don't wish anybodies business harm. My experience hasn't been great and therefore I'll be using a different independant in future, probably Hartech whom I wish I'd listened to the recommendation to use in the first place. That aside, Cath undoubtedly knows her stuff and if you can forgive her for being a bit off the wall and not looking carefully enough when pulling out of petrol station forecourts then, like some of the other members on here, you may find her to be the ideal place to take your pride on joy.

I hope that's a balanced review!

Cheers

Hiya sorry its a late entry here, but im new to the forum and also new to Porsche ownership, However I am not new to porsches, Having had first hand experience of Hartech Automotive as an employee, and also cath burrows as a co-worker i can give a unique view of both specialists.

Hartech Automotive:

Back in 1996 i was looking for a work experience placement and my brother knowing i was absolutely car mad, had a friend who he knew called grant who had set up a porsche repair garage with his dad Barry on a local industrial estate in Bolton called deakins mill, This was two minutes walk from my home so i jumped at the offer. It was at hartech I got to work alongside cath burrows. I worked with hartech for around 2 years and was with them when the expanded to a new unit further down the industrial estate. They were kind enough to put me through an apprenticeship which i f****d up by not knuckling down as i should of, but thats a different story. Hartechs standards are high, very high in fact, every nut was torqued to the correct tension, copper grease used in abundance, strip downs meticulously organised, great care taken to ensure no dirt entered the car, any parts sent out to be skimmed etc, were scrutinized and measured to exacting standards, if it wasn't right it was sent back. Every car driven, anything not spot on and the car was back on the ramps and sorted out. cars left cleaner than when they arrived, As it happens they are now based again only 5 minutes from my home, and i will have no hesitation using their garage if i had to. Luckily theyve graced me with enough knowledge to tackle most jobs myself. And even though I was eventually sacked I have to say thank you.

Cath Burrows.

What can I say, as with hartech, cath was an inspiration, it was pretty much unheard of to have a woman technician in a garage environment and especially one as passionate and knowledgeable about her work as cath, she had a black sports motorbike which was bloody evil! I had the pleasure of working with and being sorted out by cath during my stint at hartech and as i remember she was straight to the point, precise, and more than proved herself to be overly competent at her job. Her personal work standards were high, she was the go to person when a 911 came in, and was not one for mincing her words. But that said ts this honesty that stands out, I personally would rather have it laid out straight in front of me a list of jobs which need sorting out and know my car is safe and sorted, than have a technician that only fixes what you told them too without checking anything else. I would also be extremely happy to send my car to cath for any work. As a matter of fact once ive picked up the 944 this weekend thats exactly where im going for an inspection on it to gather the list of work to be done.

With the two garages above I would say that the only choice would have to be distance of travel, whichever one you choose you wont be disappointing. Both are excellent knowledgeable centres and much more reasonable than Porsche dealers and probably just as good if not better quality work produced.

Mark.
(apologies for any misspellings im using a phone )
