Post subject:  Using a portable Aircon Unit in a car

Hi,

To cut a long story short, the air con in my wifes car is caput.

As a work around and for short term use only, as we are travelling to france in it, is to buy a portable aircon unit, something like 5000BTu's, and run it on a 12v to 240v converter in the car.

Do you think this will work?

Thanks

Steve

This overlaps the day job. 5000BTU is 150watts or so & would probably struggle in a car. At a guess you need 3-4kW or around 14000BTu. That 4kW will have a COP or efficiency of around 2-3:1 so a 4kW unit will use around 1300Watts or 110Amps or so @ 12Volts. That will be a challenge in a car.
Car Builder Services do a smallish in car A/C unit which I guess uses an engine mounted compressor using 2-3HP.

Thanks Jim.

I saw on ebay a retrofit aircon unit that will link into the existing condenser / compressor :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Professional ... 239bb9399d

but this will not come in time.

Will have a look at CBS.
Cheers

That looks vaguely similar to the CBS one. Still needs an engine driven compressor though!

I lived in SW France for eight years, my AC was knackered during this this time, I opened the windows and drove a bit faster :D
