Booked the 4S and the C2 in for MOTs this morning.

I thought it would be a good idea to do them both on the same morning. Never again its too stressful, hoping the car comes back after the brake efficiency road test.

Usual tyre advisory on the 4S, inner edge wear on the fronts (rears last year), no issues with the C2. :)

Yes one at a time is traumatic enough! The Jeep is next which it needs to sell it.

Mine coming up on friday.

Interesting about the road test Sean - don't they have rollers, or am I missing the joke somewhere?

You can't put a 4 wheel drive car on the rollers.

That's fascinating Sean. So all those SUVs have to go on road too for test? What kind of equipment do they have to carry on board, or is it subjective on tester's part? Wonder how they find safe spots to do the test?

I am going to ask my mot tester all this on Friday too. He's a lovely guy who has recently run an Alvis, XJS and a Herald Vitesse!

They use a Tapley Meter

The Speedster has a slip diff so they use it on her as well. They weren't sure about the 964 and as they road test the brakes on the others they thought it best to use the Tapley.

Not just 4 x 4 but anything with a locked or limited slip diff as well. They use a tapley meter sat on the centre console. One like this http://getech.org.uk/Product/Tapley/?gc ... 0wodcN0E6w

If you give us the gearbox build code we can tell you if it has a factory LSD, mind you it could have an aftermarket fit unit, which means the correct decision made by the MOT station.

My 928 S4 has always gone on rollers. Is that because it has a 0-100% electronic PSD?

Probably, the MOT system notifies them of cars that have LSD as standard or common fit option. My Alfa 75 LE had an LSD & was always road tested.
They test the Jeep with a tapley but don't need to as you can knock the transfer box into neutral & it makes all 4 wheels independent.
Quick way to test. Jack up the back wheels with the handbrake off. Spin one rear wheel. If the other wheel rotates in the same direction you have an LSD or locked diff. If it stays still or goes in the opposite direction then it is an open diff.

Plate LSDs don't tend to last very long on the road, typically 30-40K driven hard after that the plates wear & the limited bit diminishes.
The plates look like motorcycle clutch plates. Bed time reading if your bored. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited-slip_differential

Not difficult to rebuild with new plates & get it back though.

That makes sense Jim thanks - I know my rear wheels rotate in opposite directions off ground as it puzzled me when I first noticed it when I was taking out one of the half-shafts!
