HMRC have issued an official apology to all families affected by the recent loss of data - letters are being sent out to all.

The letter states that the data lost includes:

" your and your children's names and dates of birth, your address, your National Insurance number and, where relevant, the details of the bank or building society account into which your Child Benefit is or was paid."

It then goes on to offer some patronising advice about protecting yourself from fraud " do not give out personal or accounts details"

We don't need to give these details out anymore - central government is taking care of it direct

Shouldnt think they would accept the story that our company information had been lost so we couldnt work out how much tax we owed them?

It's always the same, we have to accept whatever they dish out without question but it's not reciprocal.

nothing too important then, only most of the population affected, i suppose the tax payer will foot the bill for postage on the the 25 million apology letters. old golden brown not having a good time as PM is he, and to think he spent all that time wrestling the job from tony b liar

They have even tried to get the banks to foot the bill for any fraud also.

we got our apology this morning, very nicley worded i thought.

yes our apology arrived this morning, still does not excuse the total incompetance of the HMRC

The letter annoyed me further if anything, full of excuses a child could have come up for their homework

"Miss, the dog ate my CD-ROM"

But then, we're paying for everyone else's little darlings anyway... Oooh I know this is going to hurt!

Seriously though - losing such sensitive personal data like that is inexcusable. If a company did it, the responsible person (co. sec, usually) could quite feasibly be looking at criminal charges. Haven't seen anyone at HMRC arrested yet though...

£20k reward for the return of the discs now, but how many sets are actually missing last i heard it was 4 sets but is probably more by now

I would imagine the disks have been copied many times by now and the originals could well find their way back to bin a £20k bonus.

Are the revenue people really that stupid?
