I've just registered on here as I'm looking for a decent 944 Turbo.

I had an 86 Turbo that I sold quite a few years ago, and would like another one.

Preferably one of the later 250 models, but would consider a 220 if it's a good car.

I would consider cars needing work, but must be basically sound.

I'm in Shropshire, but will travel for the right car.

Thanks,

Paul

Welcome! It would be nice to have another one in the area; I've spotted the odd 944 about but can't recall seeing another T. Mine's an 86 car in sapphire blue (silver) and generally only comes out when the weather is good

Good luck with your search.

Rich

Thanks for the link but I went to see that car and it's nothing like the advert implies!

Firstly, service history - lots of receipts for the early years, head gasket and a clutch kit at about 60k, but that was in the 90's. No real invoices for anything since the mid 90's - that includes the belts! I was told it was off the road for 10 years, but my car check on it says 14 owners?

The 'excellent bodywork' is a joke. Very poor outside respray. Orange peel on every panel, flaking paint, touched in with a paint stick around the sunroof where it's flaked off, and the black paint on the door pillars have been painted with a brush. The body looks very straight as fa as panel gaps etc go. No signs of any damage to the front or in the boot area. On first look I thought maybe just a bad respray due to faded paint... but they clipped a pillar reversing it and instead of a grazed rear arch, a piece of filler came out, revealing a rust hole that had been filled over. So no idea what else is hiding under the paint!

I took it up the road, only in a 40 zone. It felt very lumpy and rattly / old. Not like a good 944 should drive - my old one drove very well, and was far from a mint example. They've had it since Oct and it had almost no fuel in it so that won't have helped. The manifold gasket was blowing too.

Far too much money for a car that needs the bodywork doing, and everything going through mechanically. I wouldn't dare drive it home with belts that old either. I found the 2 year warranty on the engine and gearbox amusing. What warranty company would entertain a claim on car with no service history for over a decade! No money has been spent on it for a long time, I think 'Barum' tyres on the back says a lot. Don't be fooled by the F40 in the showroom. The car is nothing like it looks in the pictures or the description, it needs a LOT of work. In my opinion just not worth it at that price for an early car.

It annoys me when cars are so badly described.

Hopefully this will help anyone else who might be thinking of going to see it.

The grey Turbo S on ebay and Pistonheads is seriously rotten, needs a restoration, not TLC. I have restored an MGB so I'm not being picky, that one has holes in it! I didn't look any further than the state of the rear 1/4's, so can't comment on the rest of the car.

Really useful summary of two cars that have been knocking about for a while.

That's why the cars previous owner listed it at £4250 before a trader bought it and re-advertised it for more than twice the price without doing any work straight away.

Glad to hear your reviews of these cars, too many people think a £5k 944 is a bargain compared to the £10k+ 944's available, it's only when you start looking deeper, or know what your actually looking at, that the bargains aren't what they appear to be.

This thread makes me nervous.
I've been lurking for a while as I'm trying to gather enough money for an S2.
I had hoped that 4-5k would get me into a decent example.
Perhaps this is not the case.

I didn't see any previous ads for the grey car, £4k is much more realistic. There's no way he'll get anything like £9k for it. He did say that Porsche had been in touch and were very interested in buying it to restore and add to their own collection..... Really?! At £9k he'll have it until it's the last one left in the world, so maybe!

I agree that the cheaper cars aren't always a bargain, but there are also some higher priced cars that you'd expect to be much better, but they're not. The problem is the cars advertised for around £20k, it seems to encourage traders to ask £10k for a £5k car, as 'it's a £20k car with a bit of work'.

Hopefully the info on the red car will help anyone thinking of looking at it. I'm sure the filler that popped out of the arch will be re-filled and blown over again! The car itself looks to be straight, but he needs to drop the price by a couple of grand or so.

Hi Paul
Thanks for the info I was going to have a look at the red one.
There are 2 with The Throttle Shop ( ex Buchanan Motors) up near Glagow which look nice but asking silly money -17k each. I am toying with driving up to look see in spite of not great feedback
Will advise if I do.

That looks lovely - nice colour & spec. Advert suggests it has good paperwork as well, would be worth an enquiry imo.

I have a grey 1990 turbo which I am preparing for sale. Will be relocating with my job and she needs to go to a new home to be driven.

It has a FSH and 4 owners since new. I've just had it in with Hartech a week ago for a Gold Major Service so the buyer can review their comprehensive condition report. A couple of items will need doing over the next 12-18 months but it is a very strong and clean example.

I am based in Dublin, Ireland.

Michael
