Do bad engine mounts really cause a lot of problems?

They can do, I must state that my fuel rail is a 968 version and the design is sightly worse.
However, worn mounts allow the engine to move more side to side under heavy load, on and off of full throttle gives lots of flex.
The fuel hose will tug slightly on the weak metal of the rail and can cause it to crack.
Very unlikely in a std road car

Another big cause is incorrect balancer shaft timing, look on the American forums and some racers were going through 6 rails a year

Thanks to everyone that came along last weekend and helped make it a great day :D

Found out why the car was running so rough on track - got a leak from the fuel rail :(

I know all about those, on my 3rd now but hopefully sorted out why.
I know Glenn had one crack, replacement engine mounts cured his, mine we think was gearbox mounts causing the vibrations

Yes. To confirm Jason's comment, I had (at least*) two fuel rails fracture and start leaking on my 944 2.7 due to worn/failed engine mounts causing excessive vibration. The cracks on the rail appeared near the brackets which mount the rail to the engine.

[* I say "at least" as the fuel rail on the car when I bought it was very shiny and new, making me suspect it had already been replaced due to an earlier fracture.]
