I put this in my euro tour thread but thought I'd copy here as it may be useful for someone:

For those doing euro trips this year, watch out, the Gendarmerie are known for targeting British drivers and they're pretty hostile to boot.

We don't really go too much over the limit (keep around 90mph generally) any more but if you really want to risk it their favourite hiding places are exits from the toilet stops, I always slow down a bit and try and have a good look in there as passing. Keep to lower limits for sure like the 90 and 110 especially when raining (lower limit), look out for gendarmerie signs as they are near their base and in approaching toll booths (normally well signed in advance). There are several little hideaway laybys behind bridge abutments and over the brows of hills too they like to sit in.

We've fallen foul of this a few times and always carry a decent amount of cash with us just in case (they are not honest to your speed either) as the trip we had to make to the ATM one year thanks to Kerry's speeding cost us a couple of hours

Same really applies to Belgium and where they have limits on Autobahns too. You'll find many more on the road police with hairdryers all over Europe than over here.

Day 2 - Sunday 22nd September 2013 - Bad Durkheim to Fussen - 250 miles total

After breakfast depart hotel at 08.00.

Follow Sat Nav Route “13.09 TIPEC Day 2am” - Bad Durkheim to Fussen - 90 miles - 1.5 hours.

Leaving the hotel at 08.00 will enable us to get to our first stop at the Porsche Museum, Stuttgart (see POI 05) via the autobahn, not long after it opens at 09.00. This will ensure that we are able to park in the underground car park at the museum (we are currently negotiating to be able to park at the front of the museum under the mirrored canopy) and also to spend the maximum amount of time enjoying this exceptional museum.

We will take lunch in the restaurant at the museum and maybe have a look at the showroom across the road before continuing our journey.

Leave the Porsche Museum at 14.00. Follow Sat Nav Route “13.09 TIPEC Day 2pm” - Porsche Museum to Fussen - 160 miles - 3 hours.

Taking the autobahn gives us an opportunity to “stretch the legs” of our vehicles a little as well as getting some distance behind us (assuming the notorious traffic around Stuttgart allows). We will top up our tanks on the motorway north of Kempten before finishing the day with a lovely drive across country, culminating with a stretch along the shores of Forggensee into Fussen and to our hotel for the evening (see Hotel Details Day 2).

All 911 drivers plus one accompanying person, upon presentation of the vehicle registration at the box office of the Porsche Museum, have free admission from June 4 to September 29, 2013. The Porsche Museum also foregoes any admission price for visitors who have been born in 1963 and can prove it by presenting their ID.

Day 3 - Monday 23rd September 2013 - Fussen to Riva del Garda - 210 miles

After breakfast depart hotel at 08.00.

Follow Sat Nav Route “13.09 TIPEC Day 3” - Fussen to Hohenschwangau - 3 miles - 10 minutes.
We drive just a couple of miles to collect the tickets at 08.20 for our 09.20 tour of Schloss Neuschwanstein (see POI 06). Although the guided tour itself is less than an hour, we will take some time afterwards to stroll outside of the castle and make the most of some fantastic photo opportunities.

Leave Hohenschwangau at 11.00 and continue to follow Sat Nav Route “13.09 TIPEC Day 3” - Hohenschwangau to Riva del Garda 207 - miles - 5.5 hours.

This afternoon’s drive is one of the most scenic on the Tour. We cross the border into Austria and immediately cross the pretty Fern Pass (see POI 07) with its views of the Zugspitze. We then follow the Otztaler valley before crossing the truly spectacular Timmelsjoch Pass (see POI 08). At the top of the pass we cross into Italy before tackling the Passo del Rombo (see POI 09). We haven’t planned a lunch stop today as it will depend on the progress we make across the passes as to where we stop. We will stop for fuel just outside of Merano. Throughout the afternoon we continue to follow alpine routes through the Dolomites until we reach our hotel on the northern shore of Lake Garda (see Hotel Details Day 3).

According to the itinerary entrance to the Porsche Museum is included in the price of the tour. Please could we confirm this as otherwise we will bring the log books for both of our 911s

Yes admission to the museum is included in the tour price, but if you are able to bring paperwork that gets you in free we would be very grateful

Loving Day 3, can't wait. Hopefully getting together with owner and co-driver on Sunday (Malcolm) to sort out one or two details, then I might be able to come up with some sensible questions for Mark!!

Just been refused a umweltzone sticker as my 911 "does not fufil the criteria required" I guess it is because it was made in 1990

I've just paid up for a last minute addition to the trip in my old-timer 944 Turbo...

I have been to Germany many times and never bothered with the umweltzone sticker. I will have to get one now, I've opened my gob and jinxed it

Loads of older 911's in Stuttgart, there must be a way round it.
